I reread Dan Simmons' 'Hyperion Cantos' every few years. The TechnoCore, a galaxy-spanning AI collective that has secretly manipulated humanity for centuries, is one of the great alien-ish intelligences. The Ousters are humanity evolved into something alien. And then there are the Labyrinthine worlds and the mysterious Shrike, all hinting at forces operating across time and space. The universe feels ancient, haunted by the ghosts of the Hegira and filled with competing powers vying for control of reality itself.

Gene Wolfe's 'The Book of the New Sun' isn't traditionally sci-fi on the surface, but it's set in the far, far future of Urth. The universe is littered with the remnants of alien civilizations and ancient human star-faring eras. The Hierodules and Hierogrammates are mysterious, powerful beings who seem to be guiding human evolution from behind the scenes across cosmic time. The alien elements are subtle, buried in the text like archaeological fragments, creating a sense of a universe immeasurably old and layered with forgotten histories.

To offer a different kind of example: the 'Orion's Arm' universe project is a collaborative online world-building endeavor. It's a hard-SF setting millennia in the future, with transhuman empires, god-like AIs, and alien civilizations like the 'Blimps' and the 'Vecs'. The scale is mind-boggling, covering thousands of years and countless star systems. It's not a single novel, but as a resource for exploring ideas about post-human and alien civilizations on a galactic scale, it's incredibly rich and detailed.

Jack McDevitt's 'Alex Benedict' novels are essentially archaeological mystery stories set in a future human confederation. They constantly deal with the relics of the 'Hickory' and other extinct alien races. The thrill is in the discovery—piecing together the history of a galaxy-spanning alien culture from fragments, like figuring out an entire civilization from a single buried pottery shard. It captures the wonder of cosmic archaeology perfectly.

Huh, I was just thinking about how few of these feature truly benevolent galaxy-spanning civilizations. Most are either mysterious, hostile, extinct, or indifferent. I guess conflict is more narratively interesting, but it does make you wonder. If a civilization gets that big and old, does it inevitably become something we'd perceive as monstrous or simply incomprehensible? Food for thought.

Honestly, after scrolling through this list, I'm just impressed by the sheer creativity out there. From empires maintained by calendar math to ones run by clone-lines of dead geniuses... it never gets old. Makes our current earthly politics seem pretty tame by comparison.
