This would become a mini production so my main checklist would be the camera body (ideally a full-frame mirrorless), the lenses (a fast 35mm for the action shots and a 50–85mm for portraits to get all the detail in) and some solid image stabilization. For any of the dynamic Spider-Man moves I would be shooting at a higher frame rate (up to 120fps) to get some great slow motion and then in post I could ease in and out of it as I see fit, to avoid any potential artifacts. This would also mean shooting with a shutter around double the frame rate to get the best natural motion blur.

Depending on whether or not Sophie does any wirework or creates a fake swing, safety equipment is essential. This would include a harness, climb rated carabiners, and mats. For lighting, 1-2 portable LED panels with softboxes or diffusers will achieve the look, especially for close ups.

Some other production items and post-production tools include a portable editing suite (with a good GPU), non-linear editors (NLE) like Adobe Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve, VFX tools like Adobe After Effects or Blender for making web graphics, removing wire from footage, and motion tracking. These tools, and many plug-ins like Mocha for planar tracking of objects, can save a huge amount of time for many producer-directors. Finally, a couple of small bits of gaffer tape, some clamps, a reflector, and a back-up drive are also needed.

This tutorial can be easily remade in a lower budget to recreate a Sophie Rain Spider-Man tutorial. I’ve previously mentioned that I use a modern smartphone with a gimbal to create high quality smooth shots, also a plain mask or Spider-Man suit and couple of simple practical lighting pieces (such as a couple of battery powered LED panels). For shooting outdoors during the day with natural light, a simple reflector is more than enough to add in some fill and create better contrast in your images. For dialog recording, I use a simple clip mic and then edit together the tutorial using an app such as Premiere Rush, CapCut or iMovie, adding in cuts, color, and simple overlays to create web effects.

A cheap action camera (even a basic GoPro) is an absolute must for POV shots. A simple green sheet can be used for small compositing shots and suction mounts or clamp mounts can be used to create some really unique angles with your existing camera. When using your own cameras, safety needs to be a priority. Use spotters and create soft landing areas for any jumps and for web-slinging shots. It’s half the fun of making this kind of content inventing ways to make it look good with the minimum of equipment.
