Jason Statham stars in a plethora of hard-hitting, action-packed films; yet none are particularly ‘family-friendly’ in terms of ratings. Many, such as his roles in ‘Crank’ and ‘The Transporter’ films, are extremely R-rated with lots of violence, blood and general gut-wrenching content. However, Jason does appear in the action-comedy ‘Spy’ (2015) as a rather over-the-top parody of his tough-guy character. As the film is R-rated for violence, it’s rather more suitable for older children and teenagers, though they may find it hilarious while younger family members may simply fail to understand the humor and get bored instead.

Statham lends his voice to Gnomeo & Juliet in 2011. In this animated adaptation of the famous Shakespeare play, he voices the aggressive garden gnome Tybalt, who battles with the opposing lawn gnome force using his various garden tools. While this is a far cry from most of Statham’s films, it is also oddly wholesome. For families with teenagers, Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw from 2019 provides plenty of lighthearted fun and lots of action, and, despite some occasional bloody gore, this is probably Statham’s film closest to ‘fun for all ages’ while he can still play cool.

I should say that our films aren’t really for kids to watch but The Bank Job is a great film for families with older teenagers. It’s a true story about a robbery told in a really taut and witty way with lots of great dialogue. The language is quite strong and some of the themes are for older teenagers but it’s not as graphic or as much of an action movie as some of Jason’s other films. He plays a reluctant gang member and it’s a great story but it’s not Pixar – it has its fair share of bite.

My go-to ‘family-friendly’ actioner would have to be The Meg (2018), a rather enjoyable creature feature. It’s not often I’d recommend something this homogeneous, but the movie is basically a big Jurassic Park-esque adventure, with tons of action but very little in the way of violence. It’s a pretty B-movie (which is probably part of its fun), with plenty of suspense but not too much gore. My nephew even enjoyed this, but was a bit freaked out by it for a week or so afterwards and insisted on sleeping with the lights on. Statham’s one-dimensional hero is your typical mister- gruff-but- ultimately-protective-of-family type, with none of his usual complex moral catastrophe going on.

Although not suitable for children, The Italian Job (2003) is a great introduction to action films. As a heist, it has minimal violence, lots of action and plenty of teamwork and cleverness. In this film Statham is the charming getaway driver in a good old-fashioned caper, rather like Ocean’s Eleven. A great film for adults and children to watch together.
