Yates’ 'Revolutionary Road' is the big one—DiCaprio and Winslet absolutely nail the toxic marriage spiral. The film’s gorgeous, but it smooths out some of the book’s roughest edges. Funny how his other novels never got the same attention, though I read once that 'Eleven Kinds of Loneliness' almost became an anthology series. Shame it fell through; those short stories would’ve killed on HBO.

Richard Yates' writing has this incredibly raw, unfiltered quality that makes you feel like you're peering right into the souls of his characters. It's no surprise Hollywood tried to adapt his work—though not as often as you'd expect. The most famous is probably 'Revolutionary Road,' which got the star-studded treatment with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet reuniting post-'Titanic.' Sam Mendes directed, and while it’s visually stunning, I remember wishing it dug even deeper into the crushing suburban despair Yates captured. The book’s quiet moments of emotional devastation hit harder, but the film’s still worth watching for the performances alone.

There’s also 'The Easter Parade,' though it never got a full adaptation—just a TV movie in the late '70s that’s near impossible to find now. Yates’ stuff is tricky to translate because so much of the pain is internal. His characters are trapped in their own heads, and that’s hard to show on screen without heavy narration or awkward exposition. Still, I’d love to see someone take a crack at 'Cold Spring Harbor' or 'Disturbing the Peace.' His stories about failed artists and crumbling marriages feel more relevant than ever.
