The uncut onyx doesn't have any use besides being cut into an onyx gem. Once cut, it's identical to any other onyx. So the whole hunt is for the uncut version specifically. It's a weirdly specific item gatekept by Wilderness content. I wonder why Jagex designed it that way. Probably to give those older, less-rewarding Wilderness bosses a rare and desirable drop to attract players and create conflict. It works, I guess. Those bosses would be dead content without it. So in a way, the uncut onyx is a piece of game design that keeps a slice of the Wilderness alive, for better or worse.
