How To Find Well-Written Dark Erotic Fiction Novels?

Most dark romance TV shows are adaptations. One of my favorites is the TV-series ‘You’. The TV-series is based on Caroline Kepnes’ novels about the same topic and is a very dark interpretation of love and the borderline between love and obsession. As observer of the happenings the series makes you question what is right and what is wrong. Is love enough to make something right? 'Gebracht durchs Böse. Eine dunkle Liebe‘ – another dark romantic favorite of mine are 'The Vampire Diaries'. In the framework of the supernatural drama unfolding between humans and vampires unfolded a very dark love story and consequently also romantic entanglements. 'Outlander' is another show based off a novel series by Diana Gabaldon. This show is a long, sweeping love story through time that follows the tender and rough relationship of Jamie and Claire. A great choice for people who love dark, twisted romance.

So, I was messing around with my local library’s digital portal, and I found out they have a whole collection of erotic memoirs through their partnership with Hoopla. The ratings on the books I found are from library journals, which are more concerned with rating a book for literary value, rather than how sexy it is. So, it’s really a great resource for people looking for smart, literary erotic works. I found a great book of poems, ‘Apology’ by Jon Pineda, for free. Although not entirely erotic, the intimate scenes are incredibly honest and beautiful. I can totally recommend searching the online catalog of your local library for smart erotic literature.

I spent hours researching ways to download free eBooks, including venturing into the free sections of big retailers like Amazon, which only stock the first book in a series. But then I discovered author’s newsletters and their websites. I found out that a lot of indie dark romance authors give away full-length novels or long novellas as reader magnets to subscribe to their newsletter. I’m talking about authors like Amelia Wilde, Sam Mariano, and Trisha Wolfe. Check if your local library uses apps like Libby or Hoopla for borrowing eBooks, audiobooks and documentaries. I was surprised by how many current dark romance titles are available to borrow for free with my library card. No waiting months for the eBook to become available, it’s the most legit way to read for free without having to rely on shady websites.

The world of BDSM erotica has seen huge growth recently and I have fallen in love with several recent releases. Alessandra Hazard’s Straight Guys series has some of the most deliciously slow tension in exploring a gay awakening, while CJ Roberts’ Dark Duet series is a deeply emotional read – often dark, but always cathartic in the end. For something completely different, historical combined with modern kink, I recently read Annabel Joseph’s Comfort Object, set in Victorian times and exploring the repression of the era with the modern kink of power exchange. What unites these books is that they make power exchanges feel deeply personal rather than purely performative.

While it is difficult to pinpoint the very first romance novel, it is widely accepted that Samuel Richardson’s Pamela, published in 1740, is one of the first true romance novels. Callirhoe by Chariton of Aphrodisias (c. 2nd century AD) and Tristan and Iseult (c. 12th century) were among the first works of literature to explore the emotions of love and the longing that often accompanies it. Many of the characteristics that have become synonymous with romance today originated with these groundbreaking works, which continue to influence the genre to this day.

I have a soft spot for the ‘old school’ digital pioneers. I’m thinking of people like Lora Leigh whose Breeds series (paranormal) used to be everywhere in the early 2000s. Or Shayla Black whose Wicked Lovers series is some of the best modern erotic romantic suspense out there. The smut in these books can feel a bit dated at times. The alpha males can be rather dominating in a somewhat less aware way to present days and the language can be rather more clinical and/or use more euphemisms but these authors are true foundations of the genre. Reading them is like watching a genre grow up. You can see the beginnings of modern consent discussions and of female agency as well. And yes, there is plenty of steamy sex in them too – often in creative and unusual scenarios. When I read these authors, I can see where contemporary romantic fiction is coming from. I can even see the seeds of contemporary discussions of consent, and women’s agency, and all of that – but mostly I am reading them for the steam, which is creative and very enjoyable. If you’re a completist, or you just want to read some historical fiction that helps to explain how we got from there to here – that is, from clandestine distribution of hardcover books to this amazing open smut market that we have today – reading some of the earlier specialists in this field is kind of fascinating.

I’m not convinced that blending fact and fiction in historical fiction is inherently difficult to do well or frequently fails to rise to the challenge. We’re smarter readers than that. We all make up stuff as we go along when reading any historical narrative, factual or fictional, as well as the news. Every narrative, whether factual or not, is comprised of an event or facts and the author’s interpretation of them. Thus a novel that mirrors this process will feel true to life. Most people are aware that a movie ‘based on a true story’ is mostly a work of fiction, even when it’s attempting to be entirely factual. Historians and biographers certainly imagine private conversations between their subjects. No reader expects absolute accuracy from a historical novel, only that the story is true in terms of emotional and thematic veracity. Does it feel true? Does it illuminate something about human nature within the given facts? Yes? Then it’s effective and an entirely legitimate form of modern fiction.

As a graphic designer that has created a number of book covers in the past, I can confirm that the majority of horror novels are published with dark-colored covers. The reason for this is immediately obvious – they create tension from the off. Using small amounts of bright colored paint such as the dripping red on Carrie’s predominantly dark cover is jarring and really makes an impact. Dark backgrounds also allow for great use of large scale typography using white or metallic paint which makes for a really eye-catching and desirable book. The dark colors typically associated with horror are an enduring element of the genre.

Looking for free dark romance books can be a fun search for hidden treasure. BookBub is the best source for me to receive emails about free ebooks and discounts on the dark romance books I love. I have recently downloaded Fear Me by BB Reid and the other 4 books in this collection within the last month. Another site that I haven’t visited in awhile but deserves some recognition is Smashwords. I often find that indie authors list their darker novels for free on this site and recently downloaded Tears of Tess by Pepper Winters. Tapas has a Dark Romance section where you can read the beginning of novels for free and then subscribe to read the rest of the story for as low as $.59/month. I just finished reading The Devil’s Contract, which was so twisted and addicting. I also wrote about how to find free and cheap audiobooks on YouTube and found a full reading of a public domain dark romance novel as well as an indie work. There are also a few Discord servers for romance novel readers, including one I joined last year. Every now and again the members will share some freebies that are temporarily available to download from Amazon or Barnes & Noble. Remember to check the legitimacy of the site offering the freebies, as not all do this in a copyright-respecting manner.
