I think the arc peaks with the Transitions trilogy ('The Orc King', 'The Pirate King', 'The Ghost King'). It feels like a deliberate endpoint for many classic themes. Drizzt confronts the consequences of his life's work, the nature of evil races, and has to make huge sacrifices. The ending of 'The Ghost King' is a powerful, albeit temporary, conclusion to his journey with the original Companions. Everything after that is a new era, with different dynamics. The writing in those three books is some of Salvatore's most mature, dealing with change, legacy, and letting go.

For a character study, the Dark Elf Trilogy is unmatched. 'Homeland' is a masterpiece of showing a sensitive soul in a sadistic culture. You see the formation of his ethics in real time. The action is great, but it's the quiet moments of decision that define him. His relationship with Zaknafein is the emotional core of the entire saga. Those books don't just focus on Drizzt; they make you understand why he is the way he is, which makes every subsequent book richer. It's the best fantasy origin story I've ever read, period.

A classic start is 'Homeland', the first in the Dark Elf Trilogy. That's where you get Drizzt's origin story in Menzoberranzan, and honestly, it's essential. The entire character arc begins with his rejection of Lolth and drow society. You follow him through 'Exile' and 'Sojourn' as he reaches the surface. After that, the Icewind Dale Trilogy ('The Crystal Shard', 'Streams of Silver', 'The Halfling's Gem') introduces his famous companions. The Legend of Drizzt series collects them all in chronological order, which is the way to go. His arc is really about finding a moral path in a world that constantly judges him by his heritage. The later books continue exploring that theme, but the early ones are the core.
