The frustrating thing is when an app has sync but it’s buried in settings or doesn’t work reliably unless you have a constant internet connection. Good sync should be the default, obvious, and work offline-to-online seamlessly. You should finish a chapter on a plane, land, and have your progress update automatically when you get signal.

Kindle handles this offline gap perfectly. Some other apps I’ve tried require you to manually open the book while online to 'push' your progress. That’s not real sync; that’s a manual backup. Always check reviews for comments on offline sync behavior.

The evolution of this tech is wild. From bookmarks to cookies to full cloud sync. What’s next? Neural implants that sync directly to your brain so you never lose your train of thought? Sign me up, as long as it has a dark mode.

I wish more apps would sync custom reading settings like background color, font size, and margins. Kindle does this, which is great because I use sepia on my phone but pure white on my e-ink reader. Moon+ Reader also syncs these via its paid sync.

It’s a quality-of-life thing, but it makes each device feel like a natural extension of your reading, not a separate console you have to reconfigure. Good sync isn’t just about location; it’s about the entire reading environment.

The sync in the comiXology app used to be fantastic for comics, but since Amazon folded it into the Kindle app, the experience has been… inconsistent. Sometimes my progress in a graphic novel syncs, sometimes it doesn’t. It’s frustrating.

I’ve resorted to manually noting which issue I’m on if I switch from my Fire tablet to my phone. For a company that nailed sync with prose, it’s surprising how clunky the comic integration feels. Hopefully they improve it, because the selection is unbeatable.

Aldiko is a classic, but the older Aldiko Book Reader (not Aldiko Next) doesn't do cloud sync in the free version. You'd need the paid upgrade for that. So, scratch that one off your list if sync is a must-have for no cost.

Finding a truly seamless sync can be a nightmare. From my testing, Kindle's own app remains the king for that specific feature, even if you sideload your own DRM-free EPUBs now. The progress updates almost instantly between my phone and tablet, and it even remembers where you stopped if you switch between the app and a physical Kindle device. The catch, of course, is the ecosystem lock-in, but for a free, reliable sync, it's hard to top. Google Play Books also does a solid job for uploaded PDFs and EPUBs, though its reading features feel a bit more utilitarian. If you stick with one of these major platforms, the headache of losing your place disappears.

Which free book reading websites sync progress across devices?

Has the conversation moved past just websites to apps? Because the line is so blurred now. Most 'websites' are just web wrappers for an app experience. For instance, the serial story platform 'Yonder' from Kakao has a ton of free content (with a slow drip-feed). Their app syncs perfectly. But is it a website? They have one, but the experience is designed for mobile. So when we ask for websites, are we excluding these mobile-first, app-centric platforms that also have a web portal? I think for modern reading, the app is the primary interface, and the web is secondary. The sync feature lives in the app ecosystem.

I wish Goodreads would properly integrate with Kindle or other apps to auto-sync progress. The manual update is a chore. Imagine finishing a chapter on your Kindle and having your Goodreads status auto-update. That's the dream. The technology is obviously there; it's a business deal problem. Until then, our progress exists in separate silos: one for reading, one for social.

For purely organizational syncing—keeping your library and collections the same across devices—Google Play Books and Kindle are top. For progress syncing, they’re also top. But if you want to annotate and highlight, and have those sync too, Kindle is the strongest. My highlights and notes appear on all my devices and are even accessible on the web. Google Play Books does this too, but I find its note-taking interface less polished. If you’re a student or someone who actively engages with text, this is a huge factor. The free app becomes a powerful study tool when all your annotations are always with you.
