The Memoirs sub-series is seriously underrated. 'Grunge' and 'Sinners', following Chad Gardenier in 1980s Seattle and New Orleans, have this fantastic period feel. The tech is older, the monsters are just as nasty, and Chad’s voice is wonderfully cynical. It’s a great palate cleanser between the main Owen Pitt stories. You get to see how the Monster Control Bureau operated in a pre-internet, pre-cellphone era, and it adds a lot of depth to the universe. I’d almost recommend reading the first Memoirs duology right after the third main book, before the global stakes get too high. It grounds you back in the messy, personal work of hunting.

For those asking about the 'Memoirs' series, it’s co-written with John Ringo, and it has a slightly different flavor. It’s a bit more military-focused, given Ringo’s style and the protagonist’s Marine background. It’s still unmistakably Monster Hunter, but if you’re a fan of Ringo’s other work, you’ll notice his touch. They’re a great addition, but they’re definitely a side branch of the main story tree. You can read the entire main Owen Pitt series without touching the Memoirs and get a complete story. The Memoirs are bonus content for those who want more of the world.

Huh, I always thought the Monster Hunter books were just novelizations of the video games. Learned something new today. Might have to check out the first one now that I know it’s its own thing.

I’ve seen this question a lot in book groups. The full list in simple publication order is: 1. Monster Hunter International (2009), 2. Monster Hunter Vendetta (2010), 3. Monster Hunter Alpha (2011), 4. Monster Hunter Legion (2012), 5. Monster Hunter Nemesis (2014), 6. Monster Hunter Memoirs: Grunge (2015), 7. Monster Hunter Memoirs: Sinners (2016), 8. Monster Hunter Siege (2017), 9. Monster Hunter Memoirs: Saints (2018), 10. Monster Hunter Guardian (2019), 11. Monster Hunter Bloodlines (2021), 12. Monster Hunter: Ring of Fire (anthology, 2022), 13. Monster Hunter 7: Ends (2024). That’s thirteen books total for the core prose universe. Hope that helps!

What is the chronological reading order for all Monster Hunter books?

It's an anthology universe. Like 'Black Mirror' or The Cthulhu Mythos stories by different authors. You wouldn't ask for the chronological order of all Cthulhu stories; you'd pick a writer you like. Do the same here—pick an artist or writer whose style appeals to you.

What is the correct Monster Hunter International book order?

I'm more of a mood reader, so I sometimes pick up an MHI book based on what monster I'm in the mood for. Want werewolves? Read 'Alpha'. Zombies? That's 'Vendetta'. Deep sea horror? That's later in the series. This approach definitely spoils things, but if you're just in it for the tactical monster-slaying scenes, it works. It's a terrible way to follow the story, but a great way to enjoy the set-pieces. The books are packed with detailed action that's satisfying on its own. I wouldn't recommend this for everyone, but for a casual dip into the universe, you could do worse than just picking a monster and going for it.

I'm waiting for someone to post a definitive infographic. I'll just bookmark this thread and check back later. My to-read pile is big enough without me spending an hour researching the proper sequence for a monster-slaying book series. No offense to the franchise, I love it, but this is why I usually just play the games.

How do I read the Monster Hunter International books in order?

LOL, reading order debates are half the fun of any fandom. The other half is arguing about which monster was the coolest to imagine. For the record, the ones in 'Legion' are my favorite. You'll get there if you read in order!

What is the complete Monster Hunter book series in order to read?

Confession: I read 'Monster Hunter Alpha' first because I found it cheap, and it completely confused me. The series assumes you know who Owen Pitt is and what MHI is. Go back to the start with 'Monster Hunter International'. The journey of Owen from an accountant to a badass is the core of the series' charm.

What is the release order for monster hunter outlander books?

If you're trying to follow the publication order for the Monster Hunter books that people usually mean when they say ‘Monster Hunter’ (the Larry Correia novels and their spin-offs), here's the common release order fans recommend reading in: 1. 'Monster Hunter International' 2. 'Monster Hunter Vendetta' 3. 'Monster Hunter Legion' 4. 'Monster Hunter Nemesis' 5. 'Monster Hunter Siege' There are also a couple of notable side stories and novellas that slot into the timeline: 'Monster Hunter Memoirs: Grunge' and other short collections. I usually read the mainline novels first and then dip into the memoirs and short-story collections to get background flavor and side-character moments. For the cleanest verification, check the author’s page and the publisher (Baen) or Goodreads—those list publication dates if you want exact chronology. Personally I started with 'Monster Hunter International' and loved how it hooks you right away; the sequels expand in fun, chaotic ways.

What is the correct Monster Hunter book order to read first?

Consider the author/artist. The different series have different creative teams, so they're like different shows in the same universe. Do you like Hiro Mashima's art and style ('Orage')? Then start there. Are you a fan of Shin Yamamoto's more detailed, grounded artwork ('Flash Hunter')? Start there. Look up samples of the art online. The writing follows the art's tone. Your connection to the visual style will hugely impact your enjoyment. Pick the artist you like best.

How do the Monster Hunter spin off books fit into the main series order?

Man, I miss the old forum days where we'd argue about whether a certain novel's depiction of Gravios behavior was canon. Good times. The ambiguity was the point. It sparked discussion and deep dives into ecology notes. Maybe that's their real purpose: to fuel fandom debates, not to provide answers.

Where do the Monster Hunter Chronicles books fit in the series order?

4 Answers2026-08-03 01:53:02
If you're a completist, I'd suggest this: Read novels 1-8. Then read 'Memoirs' 1-3. Then read 'Chronicles' and 'Files'. That gives you the full, uninterrupted core story, then the big side-story, then all the little bits and pieces. That's how I did it, and it felt very satisfying.

How does the Monster Hunter International book order progress by timeline?

7 Answers2026-08-03 12:55:42
I disagree with those who say the anthology is skippable. One story in 'Files' directly sets up a faction that becomes important in 'Bloodlines'. While not strictly mandatory, it provides context that makes the later conflict richer. For timeline completionists, read 'Files' after 'Siege' but before 'Guardian'.
