My hot take: literary fiction is just another genre, and it often takes up more than its fair share in these 'balanced' lists. People treat it as the default high-quality option, which is snobbish. A perfectly balanced list might only have one literary fiction title, if any. Maybe the balance should be between commercial and critical darlings, between bestsellers and hidden gems, between ancient and modern. You could have a bestselling thriller that sold millions, an obscure cult classic, a recent award-winner, and an ancient epic poem. That's a more interesting kind of diversity than just ticking the 'romance' or 'western' box.

Balance between optimism and pessimism is underrated. We need books that offer hope and books that offer stark warnings. 'The Parable of the Sower' vs. 'The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet.' '1984' vs. 'Psalm for the Wild-Built.' A list that's only dystopian is exhausting. A list that's only hopeful can feel naive. Including both, and maybe a few that sit ambiguously in the middle, creates a balanced philosophical diet. It prepares you for the world without breaking your spirit or leaving you unprepared for its harsher realities. That might be the most important balance of all.

Forget genres; think about the author's perspective. A truly balanced list should include voices from different cultures, time periods, and life experiences. You could have ten fantasy novels, but if eight are by white dudes from the same country, is it balanced? Probably not. So maybe one slot goes to a seminal work from a non-Western literary tradition, another to a powerful modern voice from a marginalized community, another to a female author who revolutionized a genre, and another to a debut novelist from the last five years. The genres might overlap, but the worldviews and storytelling traditions would feel refreshingly distinct. That kind of balance expands your understanding of humanity, not just of genre conventions.

I'm skeptical of any list that claims to be balanced and includes zero books published before 1950. That's not balance; that's presentism. Literature didn't start with modern publishing. You need at least one truly old book—something from the 19th century or earlier—to feel the roots of storytelling. The language might be different, the pacing slower, but the themes are often startlingly modern. 'Frankenstein,' 'Dracula,' Jane Austen, the Brontës, Dickens, Dostoevsky, Twain. Picking one connects you to the conversation across centuries. It's humbling and expands your sense of what a novel can be. A list without any historical depth is just floating in the present.

Why stop at 10? The constraint is the problem. A top 20 allows for breathing room. You could have two sci-fi, two fantasy, two literary, a classic, a mystery, a romance, a historical, a non-fiction, a short story collection, a graphic novel, a play, a poetry collection, a memoir, a horror... see? Already 15, and we haven't even gotten into subgenres. The 10-book limit forces exclusion, and often the 'balanced' genres that get cut are the ones like poetry or plays, which are already underserved in these conversations. Maybe we should retire the top 10 and start thinking in top 15 or themed lists of 5.

Steampunk or alternative history. The sheer creativity of 'what if' hooked to a recognizable historical moment is delightful. It's speculative fiction with a wardrobe full of corsets and goggles.

As someone who spends way too much time browsing bestseller lists and book forums, I’ve noticed a few genres consistently dominating the top-read lists. Fantasy and science fiction are huge right now, with series like 'The Stormlight Archive' by Brandon Sanderson and 'Project Hail Mary' by Andy Weir pulling in massive audiences. These books offer immersive worlds and intricate plots that keep readers hooked. Romance is another powerhouse, especially with titles like 'It Ends with Us' by Colleen Hoover and 'The Love Hypothesis' by Ali Hazelwood. They blend emotional depth with relatable characters, making them irresistible. Thrillers and mysteries, such as 'The Silent Patient' by Alex Michaelides, also dominate because of their unpredictable twists. Lastly, young adult fiction, like 'The Hunger Games' and 'Six of Crows,' remains a favorite for its fast-paced storytelling and universal themes.

I've noticed that certain genres consistently dominate must-read lists. Literary fiction often takes the spotlight, with timeless classics like 'To Kill a Mockingbird' and '1984' making appearances. These books delve deep into human nature and societal issues, offering profound insights that resonate across generations. Fantasy and science fiction also claim a significant portion, thanks to epic tales like 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'Dune'. Their rich world-building and imaginative plots captivate readers. Historical fiction, such as 'The Book Thief', bridges the gap between education and entertainment, while contemporary fiction like 'Normal People' explores modern relationships. Mystery and thriller genres, with page-turners like 'Gone Girl', keep readers hooked with suspense and twists. Classics, romance, and even some non-fiction titles round out these lists, ensuring a diverse reading experience for everyone.
