I read a fic last month that nailed this. It was a post-war fic where Hermione’s all about rebuilding and laws and order, while Ginny’s just... broken, sort of? Not in a weak way, but she’s stuck reliving the battle every night. The growth came from swapping tools, honestly. Hermione learns to stop trying to fix Ginny with research and starts just being there, letting her be angry. Ginny, in turn, finds purpose in action again, but channeled into something like Quidditch training for war orphans—using her passion, not just surviving it. The relationship built from that felt earned, not just a cute pairing slapped onto their canon selves. A lot of weaker fics, though, flatten them. They make Ginny just the sporty girlfriend or Hermione the bookish one, and the ‘growth’ is them learning to appreciate the other’s hobbies. That’s boring. The best ones use their fundamental differences—Ginny’s pureblood family intimacy versus Hermione’s outsider status, Hermione’s rigid logic versus Ginny’s intuitive fire—as friction points. Watching Hermione loosen up her need for control because Ginny won’t be managed, or Ginny confronting her own biases because Hermione challenges them without even trying, that’s the good stuff. It feels less like ‘character growth’ in a writing-class sense and more like two people sanding down each other’s rough edges through sheer proximity.
