I'm pretty sure it's just the next batch of chapters after volume 1. The manga hasn't pulled any crazy time jumps or parallel storytelling by that point. It's a standard shonen progression: get powers, go to school, take test. Volume 2 is the 'go to school and take test' part.
If you're collecting, it's a must-have for continuity. The story doesn't make sense without it.
