Adaptations often mess this up. They’ll keep the costumes but strip out the historical context that made the book’s central conflict work, turning it into just another period costume drama. The TV version of 'Bridgerton' is a fun fantasy, but it deliberately plays fast and loose with history. The books, while not strictly accurate, still operate within the understood constraints of Regency society to create tension.
Accessibility is key. A great author introduces historical details organically. You learn about the Corn Laws because the hero’s estate is failing due to them, affecting his need to marry for money. You’re not told about the Corn Laws; you feel their effect on the romance. The blend should be invisible in its teaching.
For me, the ultimate test is whether you could lift the love story out of its time period and it would still work. If it would, the blend failed. In the best historical romances, the love story is so rooted in its specific time that transplanting it is impossible. The history and the romance are symbiotic.
I’ve seen some critique that the genre often centers privileged experiences. Where are the love stories of the servants, the miners, the factory workers? When those stories are told, the history blends in a grittier, more visceral way—the romance is about finding comfort and joy amidst back-breaking labor and economic precarity. The history is the grind of daily survival.
The seasonal calendar of the past shaped social life, and thus romance. The London Season, hunting seasons, harvest times—these dictated when people of certain classes could meet and court. A romance following that calendar feels authentically paced by the rhythm of historical life, not modern contrivance.

Lila Carrington gets the most shocking news from her father at dinner one day, and all he said was a decree that she has to follow through with even though she has her own
reservations—she was supposed to tie the knot with Levi Beaumont. The Carrington and Beaumont families have been enemies for decades, and truthfully none of them know the real reason behind the fight because each person seems to have their own side to the story, so Lila did not understand the reason that her father, who taught her never to associate herself with the Beaumont family, was the same one pushing her into marriage with one of them.
Levi did not want the relationship either, but the families had to form an alliance so they could both remain in business. It had to be done. Driven with the passion to stay in business, Lila and Levi help their family out, but with the promise to their parents that it would only last a year and they would be done.
What happens when they begin to fall for each other?
Do the Carringtons and the Beaumonts reunite, or does a war happen?
Legacy of Love and War is a romance like you have never seen before.
My hot take: the romance is the real event. Okay, not literally. But the most compelling historical fiction, romance or not, understands that history is made of millions of personal stories, most of which are lost. A romance novel imagines one of those lost stories. The grand, documented event—the war, the revolution, the disaster—is the catalyst, but the intimate, private event of two people falling in love is given equal narrative weight. In that sense, it's portraying a different kind of 'real' history: the emotional history that never gets written into textbooks.
LOL, my take is simple: if the hero makes me swoon and the plot doesn't make me roll my eyes, I'm in. I don't need a PhD in the period. Just give me a great kiss by a misty lake and I'm happy. All this talk of balance and research is fine, but sometimes you just want to feel something. Am I right?
