In general, for most ebook formats, a clickable table of contents can be created by correctly tagging headings in the source file. Some tools, like Calibre or Sigil, even create a TOC automatically. The digital version of a compilation like ‘CARNAL TEMPTATIONS-A collection of 50 steamy stories’ would typically consist of each story being a chapter of the compilation, each chapter listed in the navigation of the compilation, so that the reader can easily access the story he or she wants to read. This internal linking is very important to create a good reading experience for collections of stories.

There's a very simple step to add hyperlinks to a digital book's contents page, and that is not to skip steps and cause a lot of chaos later. Tag every chapter title in your document with a style that your software recognizes as linkable, such as 'Heading 1'. I use Vellum and Pressbooks to create digital books, and in these tools, tagging chapter titles as 'Heading 1' causes the TOC to automatically be populated with hyperlinked chapter titles.

To create hyperlinks in PDFs, use the ‘Add Bookmarks’ feature in Adobe Acrobat to create a sidebar of links to pages within your digital book. Validate EPUB files using EpubCheck to find broken hyperlinks. There’s nothing worse than an unlinked TOC; it makes your book look amateur and of less value than it really is.

I’ve just been playing with hyperlinking the contents page of a book for easier reading and it’s worked really well. I’ve used Adobe InDesign and Calibre to highlight the relevant bit of text in the table of contents and then right-clicked to add a hyperlink. In both cases you then have to add the page number or section for it to link to properly.

When creating eBooks, particularly those in EPUB or MOBI format, it is critical to include a unique ID or anchor point for each chapter or section. Hyperlinks added to the contents page of an eBook must know where to ‘jump to’ when clicked. This is typically done by the eBook conversion tool, on a ‘cf’ by ‘cf’ basis, based on the document having been written with the correct number of headings. But then you need to test the hyperlinks on as many devices as possible – a hyperlink that works on your Kindle, for example, may not work on a Kobo or Nook. If you’re creating your eBook manually then using HTML tags such as `Chapter 1` and `
` will create the necessary links. It is also vital that you check all links have worked as intended after conversion.

I have completed formatting a couple of eBooks for self-publishing. Hyperlinking the contents page is much simpler than you might imagine. Most word processors (including Microsoft Word and Google Docs) enable insertion of hyperlinks to other points within the same document. Select the text you wish to make clickable, click on the hyperlink icon and choose ‘Place in This Document’. Choose the heading or bookmark that you wish the hyperlinked text to link to within the eBook contents page.

For linking between headings on the contents page, use clear hierarchical headings (e.g. Heading 1 for chapters and Heading 2 for subsections within those chapters). You can then check the links in your finished eBook using tools such as Sigil to edit the EPUB file or Scrivener to export to EPUB. Then test the links on your e-reader or using e-reading software on your computer – there can be idiosyncratic formatting problems that get links wrong.

Creating hyperlinks to a digital contents page involves two main factors: structure and software. The main sections of your document should be written as headings and included in the contents page as hyperlinks. Writing your document in a package such as Scrivener or Calibre makes a link to the contents page of your TOC very easy – simply export with ‘generate TOC’ ticked. For PDFs, a bookmark hyperlink is created using Acrobat’s bookmark tool. Always check that the link works before you publish it.

Does Haunting Adeline Book 1 have different page versions?

1 Answers2026-07-28
I’m trying to find a physical copy of Haunting Adeline to add to my bookshelf and the page count seems to vary greatly between “versions”. Most copies of the original self-published paperback from 2021 seem to be around 384 pages. However, the book has since been picked up by a wider distribution deal and re-printed under new ISBNs. The formatting, margins and font size have all been tweaked slightly in some of the “new” prints which has resulted in some copies having as few as 380 pages or as many as 388 pages. The core story remains the same in all of these “versions”. It’s worth noting, however, that there is a special edition hardcover of Haunting Adeline that was released in 2023, which includes the author’s handwritten notes, additional scenes, and artwork. This edition is significantly longer than the paperback and truly is a different version of the book. I found a copy of this hardcover at a local bookstore, and it had a slightly different weight to the cover than my friend’s copy, although it had the same number of pages (his was a paperback). The page numbers between common print runs of Adeline and Zade are generally the same. I went to a local store and found the copy to be the same number of pages as my friend’s copy (even though the book covers felt slightly different in weight) – details for publication, etc. included on back of book and also on front of store packaging and, of course, ISBN. (I understand that ISBN and the exact page number may or may not be of importance to you.)

How to bookmark a pdf on Android devices?

10 Answers2025-07-08
I often read PDFs on my Android phone, and bookmarking is super handy for keeping track of important pages. Here's how I do it: I usually open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader since it's my go-to app. Once the file is open, I navigate to the page I want to bookmark. At the top right, there's a bookmark icon—it looks like a ribbon. I tap it, and voilà, the page is bookmarked. To view all my bookmarks later, I just tap the side menu, select 'Bookmarks,' and it shows me the list. Other apps like Xodo or Google PDF Viewer have similar features, though the exact steps might vary slightly. The key is to look for the bookmark icon or check the app's help section if you're unsure.

How many pages is the Odyssey book in the original hardcover version?

8 Answers2025-07-16
'The Odyssey' is one of my favorites. The original hardcover version I own, published by Penguin Classics, has around 384 pages. It's a bit dense, but the translation by Robert Fagles makes it incredibly readable. The page count can vary depending on the publisher and the size of the text, but most hardcover editions hover between 350 and 400 pages. If you're looking for a specific edition, I'd recommend checking the ISBN or the publisher's website for exact details. The beauty of 'The Odyssey' is that even though it's ancient, it feels timeless, and the hardcover versions often include helpful notes and maps.

How to join PDFs and maintain bookmarks?

Most of these PDF combiners are way overkill for use on a Mac. First, you can use Preview to do this. Then, you just open the first PDF in Preview. Go to File>Print and then in the bottom-left of the PDF menu choose "Combine Files…". Add all your PDFs to this file and create a new, combined PDF file. The method described here preserves about 90% of the source file’s bookmarks. Not as reliable as Acrobat, perhaps, but it’s the fastest way to merge a number of PDFs for personal use – and it’s free.

How to find rare books in a free digital books library?

Joining specific Discord servers for genres or authors of interest can also be really useful. I know of servers for classic sci-fi, for horror, and for academic philosophy. People share links and discuss different editions of a book in dedicated channels. As people are actively searching for the same thing, it can become a collaborative hunt in real time. Someone posts that they are searching for the original magazine version of a particular story and within minutes there are links to scans provided by several members. Not only does joining these communities make the hunt less lonely, but also you can find out about books of interest that you would have otherwise never known about from other people with immense knowledge on the subject.

How does bookmarking work when reading pdf file on Kindle?

6 Answers2025-09-04
After I read this thread I tested it with my Kindle Voyage. As already described, you press the top corner of the screen to bring up the black ribbon. Interestingly enough, when you have set your Kindle to ‘every page’ (instead of ‘less often’), the black screen even flashes for a brief moment when setting a bookmark. However, if you have set your Kindle to ‘less often’, the black ribbon just appears – no full screen refresh involved. This seems to be a very minor detail but it could be important for people who are sensitive to screen flicker.Bookmarking a PDF now feels even more seamless when I have set my Kindle to ‘less often’ for page refreshes.

How to cite Gutenberg ebooks in academic papers?

9 Answers2026-07-27
When the original text is public domain, but it has been digitized into a specific e-text edition, many find this citation tricky. MLA handles this as: Author. Title. Project Gutenberg, eBook number, Publication date (the e-text release date given on the author’s Project Gutenberg homepage), URL. The fact that it is an e-book or digital file does not need to be noted in the bibliographic citation since it is a publication by Project Gutenberg. Always verify the proper eBook number and the e-text’s release date for that edition from the author’s book homepage on the Project Gutenberg website; there are often multiple versions.

How to fix book page formatting errors?

1 Answers2026-03-28
As someone who has done a lot of formatting of book pages for manuscripts and print ready PDFs, I can say that there is nothing more annoying than a wonky margin, a line of text that splits to a new page unexpectedly, or a font that just doesn’t look right. Most of these problems are simple to fix if you check the basic settings first. So, check the size of the pages you are using. Are you using 6×9 for trade paperbacks, or A4 for your docs? Also, check for ‘keep lines together’, ‘prevent widow orphan pages’ and similar options in your word processor. These are often found in the paragraph formatting options for Word and Google Docs, and can be toggled on and off to test their effect. There are times, however, where more serious reformatting is called for. This can include troubleshooting consistent font display or unGhosted hyperlinks. It’s rare that I’ve had to convert a file to a ‘clean’ format in order to allow reformatting from scratch, but such has been the case with both Word .doc and Google Doc files. Once in plain text (.txt) these can be reimported into almost any program. For eBook reformatting, however, I use the wonderful free software, Calibre, which also allows for reformatting of EPUB errors. For print, it’s worth noting that InDesign’s ‘package’ feature creates a zip file including all used fonts and linked graphics – which is very handy when distribution to printers/copy shops etc. It’s also very simple to have a second pair of eyes scan a test print for subtle errors such as: over running headers to the bottom of the page; and images bleeding into the gutter. It’s a little puzzle, but ultimately very rewarding when sorted.

Are there romance books publishers offering digital-only deals?

3 Answers2025-08-03
Self-publishing/digital-only publishing often has a stronghold in specific niches. For example, Smashwords is a leading aggregator of many self-published authors and small press publishers of romance. They publish sweet rom-coms and far darker stories of mafia ‘love’. They can publish at price-point of their choice and often do, in order to recoup their investment and thus retain greater profit than would be the case in a traditionally published book. I’ve come across lots of titles that also include exclusive bonus material such as deleted scenes, even author Q&As. Recently I’ve come across the UK digital-only publisher Aria Fiction. They publish titles in digital-only specifically for release on Kindle and Apple Books. It is a really exciting route for a publisher such as this as they are able to publish a really diverse range of titles including #OwnVoices queer romance which may not find a home with a traditionally-minded publisher. The book’s cover can be as outrageous as needed, too—no textbook covers to decorate rows of print books on store shelves. And there are simply too many fresh interpretations of popular tropes – even within just the enemies-to-lovers or fake relationship genres — to ever get bored in digital-only.
