It's interesting how the prequel reframes the entire concept of 'inheritance.' The trilogy deals with material inheritance—a house, money, stocks. The prequel deals with emotional inheritance—grief, strategy, a legacy of pain. Reading the trilogy first lets you sit with the material question. Then, the prequel answers the deeper 'why' behind it all, transforming the nature of what was inherited. That sequence—from the 'what' to the 'why'—is narratively and philosophically powerful.

The series is still ongoing with new books, right? So any 'definitive' reading order is temporary. In five years, there might be three more prequels or interquels. My approach is to read in release order as the books come out. That's how the fandom experiences it in real time, discussing each new piece as it drops. It's the purest way to avoid spoilers and share the collective anticipation. So for now, trilogy, prequel, 'The Brothers Hawthorne', and so on.

My two cents: If you're a mood reader, let that guide you. The main trilogy is fast-paced, puzzle-box mystery with romance and high society drama. The prequel is a slower, more poignant historical fiction piece about grief and strategy. If you finish 'The Final Gambit' and still want more of that propulsive energy, jump to 'The Brothers Hawthorne'. If you finish and feel contemplative, wanting to sit with the weight of the Hawthorne history, then 'The Grandest Game' is your natural next step. There's no single right answer.

This might be a niche opinion, but I treat 'The Grandest Game' as a standalone bonus feature, not a required chapter in the sequence. You could read it anytime after finishing the first book, really. It doesn't spoil future plot twists from the later main books. Its value is pure character enrichment for Tobias. So if you're halfway through 'The Hawthorne Legacy' and get intensely curious about the old man's past, go ahead and pause to read the novella. It won't disrupt the narrative flow. Flexibility is key with supplemental material like this.

The best way to experience it is through audio, honestly. The narrator for the main series is fantastic, and hearing the prequel in the same voice adds a layer of continuity. I listened to the trilogy, then immediately queued up 'The Grandest Game'. It felt like a bonus episode of a podcast, a secret tape revealing the founder's thoughts. The intimate first-person perspective of young Tobias hits different when you're hearing it whispered in your ear. Highly recommend this format for maximum immersion.

"The day you realize you made a mistake it will be too late," I tell him emotionless as I walked to the door just as I was about to step out I feel someone grabbing my arm hard making me whimper, "Why would I want someone as disgusting, ugly as you again? I'm only on the second book, so maybe I shouldn't even be in this thread. Too late now! I'm avoiding spoilers, but from what I gather, there's more after the third book? Good to know. I'm just taking them one at a time as my library hold list delivers them. Seems to be working fine so far.
Oh, this is such a fun question! The 'Inheritance Games' series by Jennifer Lynn Barnes is one of those addictive reads where the order totally matters—like unwrapping a mystery layer by layer. Start with 'The Inheritance Games', which introduces Avery Grambs and the wild, puzzle-filled world of the Hawthorne family. Then dive into 'The Hawthorne Legacy', where the stakes get even higher and the twists more unpredictable. Finally, cap it off with 'The Final Gambit', the explosive conclusion that ties up all those tantalizing loose ends.
If you're a completionist like me, don't skip the novella 'The Brothers Hawthorne'—it’s a juicy deep dive into Grayson and Jameson’s dynamic, though it’s best enjoyed after the main trilogy to avoid spoilers. Trust me, reading out of order would be like solving a riddle backward—possible, but way less satisfying! The way Barnes layers clues and character arcs means each book builds on the last, so savor the ride.
Publication order is key, but also consider the format. The trilogy is a complete puzzle. The newer books are like opening a new puzzle box with some of the same pieces but a different picture on the lid. 'The Brothers Hawthorne' requires knowledge of the family dynamics established in the first three books to really hit home.
Jumping around would dilute the impact of the character arcs, especially Grayson's. Read them as they were released.
From a fan's perspective, reading order is sacred. The shipping dynamics alone! The will-they-won't-they tensions that develop across the trilogy would be completely undercut if you read the later books first. You'd know who ends up with whom, or what familial secrets come out, which ruins the slow-burn romance and the shocking family revelations. For the full emotional rollercoaster, you have to experience the story as it was released.
I think a lot of people get tripped up because 'The Brothers Hawthorne' has a different protagonist. But it's still a direct sequel in terms of timeline. Read the Avery trilogy first to understand the Hawthorne family, the mansion, and all the games. Then the brother-focused books will hit much harder because you'll already care about them.
The perfect way to think about it is as two connected series. Series A: The Inheritance Games Trilogy. Series B: The Hawthorne Brothers Duology. You must complete Series A before starting Series B. There's no overlap or alternative starting points.
