While it leans more thriller, 'Kaun?' (the TV series, not the film) deserves a nod. The plot revolves around a family entangled in a murder mystery where the suspect might be a supernatural entity. The dynamics between the siblings and their parents are fraught with suspicion and old rivalries, which the supposed haunting exacerbates. The question of whether the terror is supernatural or a human using the legend as a cover adds a great layer to the family drama. Everyone's motives are questionable, and the 'curse' becomes a tool for manipulation within the family.

I bounced off 'Betaal' pretty hard because the family drama felt tacked on compared to the zombie action. The father-daughter tension was there, but once the colonial zombies showed up, it became a standard survival shootout. The initial promise of a generational curse clashing with modern policing got lost. For a pure blend, the drama needs to remain central throughout, not just be the inciting incident. The supernatural should be a mirror for the family's issues, not a separate problem they have to deal with after they've finished arguing.

Which horror series mix psychological horror with supernatural lore?

The film 'Hereditary'. The supernatural lore is a detailed, slow-burn cult plot aiming to summon the demon Paimon. The psychological horror is the family’s unraveling after a traumatic death, the mother’s inherited mental illness, and the suffocating weight of grief and guilt. The two are inseparable; the cult manipulates the family’s psychological weaknesses, and their trauma makes them vulnerable to the supernatural invasion. The horror is in the domestic breakdown—the screaming arguments, the silent dinners—as much as in the head-banging and invisible forces.

Which Indian horror books focus on social issues alongside supernatural terror?

I'm just picturing the book cover designs for these. They probably move away from the cliché of a creepy girl with long hair on a dark cover. Maybe they feature distorted cityscapes, oppressive architectural details, or symbolic objects loaded with social history. The marketing of these books must be a challenge—how do you signal 'horror' and 'serious social novel' at the same time? It probably leads to some of the most interesting and artistic covers out there.
