The problem with 'available' is that many are out of print. You'll see a title listed somewhere, but tracking down a physical copy for less than $50 is a whole quest.
Translated fantasy or sci-fi seems rare. I'd kill for a good English version of some of the popular Malayalam speculative fiction. The market seems to think the West only wants 'literary suffering' from India.
God, 'Samskara' by U.R. Ananthamurthy (Kannada) is a masterpiece in translation. That book messed me up in the best way—it's this intense philosophical novel about ritual, death, and decay. The English version captures the unease perfectly.
I found a used copy of 'Ghalib: A Wilderness at My Doorstep' (translations of Mirza Ghalib's letters and prose, originally Urdu). Not a novel, but it reads like a fascinating, intimate novel of ideas. The personality just leaps off the page.
The real deep cuts are in university press catalogs. Permanent Black, Oxford University Press India, etc., have translations that never make it to mainstream bookstore shelves in the West, but are essential.

Some cravings are too sinful to confess, too dangerous to speak aloud. '𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐒 𝐓𝐎𝐎 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐎 𝐓𝐄𝐋𝐋 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐈𝐑 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐒' which are whispered in the dark, written between trembling thighs, and etched in the silence after desire has burned through reason.

When desire takes over, can love truly follow?
I wonder if graphic novel adaptations count? ‘Bhimayana: Experiences of Untouchability’ uses Digna art from Maharashtra to tell episodes from Ambedkar’s life. It’s not a translation of a novel per se, but a stunning example of narrative art from a regional tradition being used for powerful storytelling. The visuals are incredible and the story is vital. It’s a different medium, but arguably one of the most accessible ways into the themes that many Indian regional novels grapple with: caste, dignity, and resistance.
Kannada offers some real heavyweights. S.L. Bhyrappa's 'Parva' is a monumental, atheistic retelling of the Mahabharata as a straight historical novel. It's a massive, challenging read, and the translation is a huge undertaking that delivers. Then, for something completely different, U.R. Ananthamurthy's 'Samskara' is a classic novella about a decaying Brahmin community. The moral and spiritual crisis at its core is so sharply rendered, the translation feels like a surgical instrument. These are books that force you to think, not just feel.
Whenever I'm hunting for regional Indian novels in translation I start with the obvious bookshelf haunts and then wander down rabbit holes — it’s half treasure hunt, half obsession. First place I check is the big Indian publishers and their translation lists: Sahitya Akademi and National Book Trust (NBT) have long-running translation programmes, and you can often find bilingual or English versions on their sites. Indie presses like Katha, Zubaan, Speaking Tiger, and Orient BlackSwan also do brilliant work bringing regional voices into English. Online retailers — Amazon India, Flipkart, and the Kindle store — are easy for buying, but I prefer browsing publisher catalogs because smaller presses sometimes sell directly and include translator notes.
If you want curated, award-winning picks, look for prize announcements and lists. The International Booker and Sahitya Akademi translation recognitions spotlight great translations; I first discovered 'Tomb of Sand' after it started winning international awards. For newer or niche languages, university libraries and South Asian studies departments are goldmines: their catalogs (WorldCat is super handy) reveal translations from languages like Marathi, Kannada, Bengali, Malayalam and more. Don’t forget secondhand bookstores and local language stalls — I once scored a prized Kannada-to-English novella in a tiny bazaar shop.
For digital-first options, check Internet Archive for older or out-of-print translations, and Pratilipi for community translations and serialized regional fiction. Follow translators and small-press editors on social media — they often announce projects or share excerpts. Above all, be curious: a lot of brilliant regional novels are quietly available if you know which presses and institutions to check, and supporting those publishers keeps the pipeline of translations flowing.
Not going to lie, I sometimes read the translator's introduction first. Their explanation of the challenges they faced with a particular dialect or cultural concept is often more illuminating about the regional language's influence than the novel itself.
