A lot of fans gatekeep this, but honestly, both ways have merit. Timeline order gives you a profound understanding of his moral code—seeing the formative events in 'The Enemy' and 'The Affair' adds layers to his later actions. Release order offers the thrill of the unknown, the classic 'man with no past' archetype in full force.
Maybe split the difference: start with 'Killing Floor' to fall in love with the character. Then, if you're hooked, consider switching to a chronological order for books 2 onward. Though that might get confusing... maybe just stick to one method.

Consider the cultural context. 'Killing Floor' was written in the late '90s and captures a certain mood. Reading a book written in the 2010s but set in the '90s ('The Affair') after that feels different. The author's perspective had changed. Release order preserves the authentic zeitgeist of each period—what audiences expected from a thriller then versus now.
It's a time capsule of the thriller genre itself.

I borrowed 'The Enemy' from a friend first, having no idea it was a prequel. I enjoyed it, but when I later read 'Killing Floor,' I was confused. Reacher felt younger and more raw in the prequel, but in the 'first' book, he was older and more settled into his ways. It created a weird disconnect. I wish I'd started at the actual beginning of the publishing journey; it would have flowed better.

Some of the best twists in the early books involve revelations about Reacher's past. If you've already read the prequels, those twists land with a thud instead of a bang. The surprise is gone. Protecting those 'aha!' moments is reason enough for me to champion publication order. Let the story unfold as the author intended.

From a fan forum lurker perspective, the inside jokes and references in discussions always use publication order. If you want to engage with the fandom or read old threads without spoilers, it's easier if you've experienced the series the same way everyone else did. Chronological readers sometimes have to mentally translate which 'book 5' someone is talking about.
Community matters! Read in release order to speak the same language.

💣 WARNINGThis is not a love story. This is a war between trauma and tenderness. Between dominance and devotion. I am Wyatt Hayes, New York's most eligible bachelor, CEO of Hayes Enterprises. I’m also known as The Reaper, New York’s most feared Mafia Lord. The Reaper is my secret identity, and no one knows I am the man everyone wants to do business with, but will have nightmares about.
I am getting engaged with the woman every man has dreams about, except me. She is a business deal. A business deal I will have to break because when I see HER, everything I know about Love seems wrong. She is someone from my past I didn’t see coming. She is a loose end that I have to end or bring into the darkness that is my life.
My name is Blake Pierce. I am a promising freelancer journalist who specializes in crime. My friends call me the next Avenger. Bringing criminals to their knees is my passion. I do a better than the police. I am not afraid to bend the law to get the scoop I need. But when I see HIM, I realize that Love and hate walk hand in hand. He is my worst nightmare and the man I have always dreamed of having by my side.
Between Love and Hate, there’s only a thin line. Will Wyatt and Blake hate loving each other or love hating one another?
A friend asked me this, and I sketched out a hybrid order. Begin with 'Killing Floor' to establish the baseline Reacher. Then, when you get curious about his army days, slot in the prequels like 'The Enemy' and 'Night School' where they fit chronologically in your read-through. It's a more fluid approach. You're not locked into one list. Maybe after book five, you take a detour to read a prequel. It keeps things fresh and lets you explore his past on your own terms. The series is so long that mixing it up can prevent burnout. Think of it as creating your own Reacher anthology experience.
I attempted a timeline-order read-through using a list from a fan wiki. Made it about four books in before I gave up and went back to my original publication-order collection. The effort of checking the list, making sure I had the right ebook, it just killed the casual pleasure of grabbing the next one off the shelf. It felt like homework.
Honestly, the best order is the order that gets you reading. Stressing over a list can be a barrier. Saw 'Killing Floor' on a shelf, loved it, and just kept grabbing whatever was next at the used bookstore. Had zero issues following along. Reacher's life is simple: he shows up, solves a problem, leaves. Rinse, repeat. Enjoy the ride.
The sheer number of books is daunting. Don't think of it as 'I must read all 25+ in order'. Think of it as a buffet. Publication order is just the layout of the buffet. Try a few dishes from the start. If you're still hungry, keep going down the line. If you get full, stop. No one is grading you on completion. The order is just a suggested path through an abundant and generally consistent menu.
The prequels are a different genre, almost. The military police novels are more procedural, more confined by rules and hierarchy. The drifter novels are westerns—a lone hero rides into a corrupt town. The timeline shift signals a genre shift. Reading them all mixed together in chronological order might give you tonal whiplash. One book he's filing reports; the next he's beating up five guys in a bar. Keeping them grouped—either all the prequels together or in publication order—keeps the tonal consistency of your reading session higher. It's a subtle point, but it matters for immersion. You settle into the rhythm of a specific aspect of his life.
From a collector's or completist's angle, seeing the cover art and book design evolve in release order is part of the fun. The early UK paperback covers have a totally different feel than the later minimalist American ones. Following timeline order on an e-reader strips that away. You're missing a layer of the cultural artifact. The books are products of their time, and reading them out of sequence can make the occasional dated tech reference seem even more jarring. Publication order keeps you in the same headspace as readers who waited for each new installment.
