Pick any that has a movie adaptation you've already seen, like 'Kiss the Girls'. That way, you're not stressed about the plot, and you can just enjoy his writing style and how he builds scenes compared to the film. It’s a low-pressure way to sample his work.

My first was 'Honeymoon', co-written with Howard Roughan. It’s a slick, sexy thriller about a professional black widow. The chapters fly by, the protagonist is fascinatingly amoral, and the glamorous settings are a nice change from police precincts. It feels like a modern noir film and is incredibly easy to get into.

I'm gonna go against the grain and recommend his non-fiction, 'The Murder of Stephen King'. Just kidding! That doesn't exist. But seriously, his true crime book 'Filthy Rich' about Jeffrey Epstein is a standalone and is gripping because the reality is so horrifying. It reads like one of his thrillers, but it's all true, which is somehow scarier.

I’m a sucker for a good heist, so 'The Perfect Assassin' (a BookShot) was my gateway. It’s about a doctor recruited as a hitman. The premise is ridiculous, but the execution is so slick and fast that you buy into it completely. It’s pure, unadulterated fun.

My introduction was 'The 9th Judgment', a Women’s Murder Club book, and I was hopelessly lost on the character relationships. So my strong advice is to actually avoid series starters if you want a pure standalone. Pick a title that has no 'Club', 'Cross', or 'Michael Bennett' on the cover.

Which James Patterson stand alone book should I read first?

I read 'The 6th Target' (a Women's Murder Club book) thinking it was standalone. Big mistake. Felt completely lost with all the recurring characters and subplots. So my earnest advice: make absolutely sure it's truly a standalone before you start. Check Wikipedia or a fan site. Many of his books with titles that sound standalone are actually part of a series. The true standalones are often the ones with the more generic, movie-title-style names. Do a quick search to avoid my confusion. Nothing worse than getting invested and realizing you're book seven of something.

Which standalone James Patterson novel works best as a first read?

I genuinely think the concept of a 'first read' is overrated. Just read the one whose synopsis you don't remember five minutes after reading it. That's the Patterson experience. The plots are vehicles for pace, not for lasting memory. So pick at random. Use a random number generator on his bibliography page. The outcome will be the same: a few hours of distracted entertainment, followed by a vague recollection of a twist. And sometimes, that's exactly what you need from a book.

What are the best James Patterson books to read first?

If you're diving into James Patterson's world for the first time, 'Along Came a Spider' is hands down the best starting point. It introduces Alex Cross, one of his most iconic characters, and sets the tone for his fast-paced, twisty thrillers. The way Patterson balances psychological depth with page-turning action is masterful. I couldn't put it down when I first read it—the villain Gary Soneji is genuinely terrifying, and the cat-and-mouse game between him and Cross is electric. After that, I'd recommend '1st to Die,' the first Women's Murder Club novel. It shows Patterson's knack for ensemble casts and forensic details. The friendship between the four women anchors the grisly crimes in something warm and human. What I love about Patterson is how he makes you care about his characters while still delivering those shocking cliffhangers at the end of every chapter.

What is the correct reading order for James Patterson standalones?

You've got me stumped on this one—James Patterson's output is a tidal wave at this point. Aren't most of his books technically standalones outside the big series like Alex Cross? I'd just grab whatever's on the library shelf and dive in, no order needed. That's half the fun with an author like him. Honestly, I'm not the person to ask for a definitive list. I'm more of a 'see a cool cover, read the book' type when it comes to thrillers.
