I have a soft spot for 'Ascension' because of the Grissom Academy connection that later appears in ME3. It's the second Swallow novel. Reading 'Revelation' first isn't strictly necessary, but it introduces Kahlee Sanders, who becomes a central figure in 'Ascension'. So for character continuity, yes, follow the order. Both books are light, cinematic reads that feel like episodes of a TV show set in the Mass Effect world.

Honestly, I think the fandom sometimes overcomplicates this. James Swallow wrote two books. Read 'Mass Effect: Revelation' before 'Mass Effect: Ascension'. That's it. They're not a sprawling epic. They're supplementary material. If you enjoy the universe, you'll probably enjoy these. If you don't, the order won't save them. The end.

I'm surprised how many people stress about the 'correct' order. It's two books. Read 'Revelation', then 'Ascension'. You'll be fine. They're not 'The Silmarillion'. They're tie-in novels designed to be accessible. If you forget which is first, just look at the publication years—2007 then 2008. Problem solved.
