Can't believe nobody's mentioned the little unofficial connections that pop up. It's more about the legal world than a strict timeline. For instance, 'A Time to Kill' and 'Sycamore Row' both feature Jake Brigance, but you could read the latter first and still get the gist. Grisham's world is full of these loose, atmospheric ties—minor characters like lawyers or judges might get a name-drop elsewhere. I'd say just pick whatever plot sounds most interesting, then look up character names if you want to trace threads later. Trying to read in a strict 'connected order' might actually spoil the fun of discovering those little Easter eggs.
For a fun project, read them in the order they appear on a 'Best Grisham Books' ranked list, worst to best. You end with the masterpieces like 'A Time to Kill' and 'The Rainmaker.' It's an upward trajectory of quality. The connections won't matter, but you'll see his writing improve, which is its own kind of narrative.
The audiobook narrator for 'The Reckoning' is different, and it gives that book a unique, epic, almost historical feel. It's not connected to anything else, as far as I know. It's a great example of how each book can be its own world, even within the same author's style. Sometimes a clean break is nice.
The only must-follow sequence is Jake Brigance: 'A Time to Kill' (1980s), 'Sycamore Row' (1980s, but written later), 'A Time for Mercy' (1990s). The other links are so minor. For instance, 'The Firm' and 'The Pelican Brief' are both early 90s thrillers with no character overlap. They're connected by era and style, not story. Read those in any order your heart desires.
His newer books sometimes feel like they're in conversation with his older ones. 'The Whistler' and 'The Judge's List' are about judicial corruption, a theme he touched on in 'The Brethren' and 'The Summons' years earlier. It's less a direct link and more like a musician revisiting an old theme with new techniques. Interesting for long-time fans to compare, but not necessary for new readers.
