I gotta push back a little on the idea it's only about them. Klaus, Sterling's dad, is a huge presence from the start, even if he's not in every scene. The whole reason Sterling is so uptight is his dad's expectations and the weight of their family business. You feel Klaus's influence in Sterling's every decision.

And yeah, Lake's son Max is a key character. He's the reason she and Sterling keep getting forced into proximity. Without the kid needing stability, they'd probably never speak. So the core is Sterling and Lake, but their orbits are shaped by Klaus's shadow and Max's needs right from the beginning.

Right off the bat, the story revolves almost entirely around Lake and Sterling. It’s kind of refreshing to have such a tight focus on just two characters—makes the initial awkwardness and tension feel really claustrophobic, in a good way. You get Sterling, who’s this rigid, rule-following guy still grieving his mom, and then Lake, who’s all chaotic energy and just moved in next door with her son.

Their first interactions are pure friction. He’s annoyed by the noise; she’s unapologetically loud. The kid, Max, is there too, and he’s a catalyst for a lot of it, but the early chapters are really about these two adults butting heads. There’s no huge ensemble to keep track of, which lets you dive deep into their messed-up dynamic from page one.

Sterling. Lake. Max. Her ex is mentioned but not present. His dad looms. That's your cast. It's a small, intense character study, not a sprawling saga.

Who are the main characters in The Start of Us?

The web novel 'The Start of Us' has this really vibrant cast that stuck with me long after I finished reading. At the center is Ren Xiaofei, this scrappy underdog with a heart of gold—he’s the kind of guy who’ll trip over his own feet trying to save someone else. Then there’s Su Liying, the icy genius who secretly collects stray cats, and their dynamic is chef’s kiss. The way their banter slowly melts into trust feels so organic. Oh, and don’t get me started on the side characters! Lin Jie, the loudmouth best friend with a hidden tragic backstory, steals every scene he’s in. It’s one of those stories where even the minor characters, like the grumpy cafeteria lady who spoils Ren, leave an impression. What I love is how the author avoids clichés. Su Liying could’ve been another cold beauty trope, but her vulnerability around animals and her quiet panic during thunderstorms add layers. Ren’s not just a generic nice guy either—his struggle with feeling inadequate despite his kindness hits hard. The rival, Zhao Yi, is another standout; he’s not purely villainous, just painfully lonely. Honestly, I’d read a spin-off about any of them.

Which characters are central to the story of us and why?

There are a few people who always show up in the way I tell our story: you, me, and the version of ourselves that remembers the little things. To me, you are the character who moves the plot — the impulsive idea, the laugh that starts a chain reaction, the apology that shifts the direction of the next scene. I’m the one who notices the choreography of days, who keeps receipts of what we promised and what we forgot. Those two roles alone create sparks and pauses; that’s where the main drama and tenderness live. Beyond us, there are quieter but essential characters: Habit, who wears the same jacket every morning and keeps us tethered; Memory, who edits the film late at night; and Time, who is both friend and antagonist, erasing and revealing at odd intervals. I think of them as active participants — Habit shapes our routines, Memory colors our arguments into stories, and Time tests whether our gestures mean anything when stretched out. When I tell people about us, I talk about those visible moves and those invisible forces, because together they explain why we keep trying, why we fail sometimes, and why certain small acts keep glowing long after the scene ends.

Is the beginning of us based on a true story or fiction?

So glad this came up. I've dug around on this a bit and the consensus among book bloggers and interviews with CoHo is that 'It Ends with Us' isn't based on one specific, documented true story. Colleen Hoover has said she drew inspiration from her mother's experience in a difficult relationship. That's a huge part of the book's DNA – understanding that cycle from a place of personal witness, even if it's not her own direct autobiography. The fictional elements are pretty clear, though. Lily's specific career, Atlas's whole character arc, the particular sequence of events – that's all crafted. But the core emotional truth about love, pain, and making impossible choices feels deeply real because it's grounded in that inspiration. It's less 'based on a true story' and more 'fiction informed by a real-life perspective.' Reading it, you get that unsettling sense that this fiction isn't as far from reality as you'd hope.

What is the main plot of the beginning of us novel?

I just finished reading 'The Beginning of Us' and the opening really surprised me. It kicks off with the two leads, Grayson and Chloe, already married but in a completely loveless, business-like arrangement. The prologue is this super tense scene at a charity gala where they're putting on a perfect public facade, but the narration makes it brutally clear they're basically strangers who can't stand each other. I thought it was another sweet college romance based on the cover, but nope, it throws you right into the deep end of a fractured marriage. The initial plot then jumps back five years to their first meeting in college, which is where the 'beginning' truly starts. Chloe is the scholarship student from the wrong side of the tracks, and Grayson is the legacy admit from a powerful family. Their first interaction is a clash—he bumps into her, spilling her books, and his apology is dripping with condescension. The early chapters are all about this push-pull, enemies-to-lovers tension in an academic setting, with a big class divide hanging over everything. It cleverly makes you wonder how on earth these two went from that spark to the ice-cold couple we saw in the prologue. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, knowing where they end up. It gives the whole 'meet-cute' a really bittersweet, almost ominous feel.

Who are the main characters in 'The Story of Us' book?

The main characters in 'The Story of Us' really stuck with me because of how deeply human they felt. At the center is Emma, a fiercely independent artist who’s trying to reconcile her dreams with the messy reality of adulthood. Then there’s Jake, her childhood best friend turned complicated love interest—his loyalty and quiet strength make him impossible not to root for. The book also digs into secondary characters like Emma’s eccentric grandmother, whose letters from the past add this beautiful layer of generational wisdom. What I loved was how their flaws weren’t just quirks; they felt like real people I’d want to grab coffee with. One standout for me was Leo, Jake’s sarcastic but deeply caring roommate. His banter with Emma gave the story so much levity, but his own subplot about struggling with imposter syndrome at work added unexpected depth. The author has this knack for making even minor characters, like Emma’s blunt-but-well-meaning boss, feel fully realized. It’s rare to find a book where every character lingers in your mind like old friends, but this one nailed it.
