THE LINE BETWEEN US
He caught me looking, just for a second, and we froze.
Awkward.
We both looked away at the exact same time.
No words. No smiles. Just that brief, shared acknowledgment that we were here, that this was happening, that whatever we’d been to each other existed now only in echoes.
The papers were handed out.
“You may begin.”
And just like that, the world narrowed to ink and questions.
I dove in.
The first page was easy, definitions, short explanations, things I could answer in my sleep. My pen moved smoothly, confidently, like muscle memory had taken over. The noise of the hall faded into a distant hum. This was my space. My element.
