It took me a few chapters to really get a handle on everyone in 'In Pursuit of Magic', but the core group is pretty memorable once you piece it together. The protagonist is Aris Thorne, a scholar from a non-magical family who gets into the prestigious Argent Academy on sheer intellect. He’s not your typical chosen one; he’s constantly frustrated and skeptical, which makes his gradual immersion in the magical world feel earned. Then there’s Lyra, his roommate and a prodigy from a legendary magical lineage. Their dynamic is the heart of the story—it’s less a romance (at least early on) and more a fascinating clash of worldviews. She’s trying to uphold tradition, he’s trying to dismantle it to understand its foundations.

Outside that central pair, you have Master Veld, the enigmatic transmutation professor who mentors Aris. He’s shrouded in mystery, and half the forum theories are about his true allegiances. The antagonist isn’t a single person so much as an institution: the Conclave of First Principles, a governing body that hoards magical knowledge. A high-ranking member within it, Provost Caelus, serves as the main face of opposition. He’s not cartoonishly evil, just terrifyingly dogmatic. A character I found unexpectedly vital is Kaelen, a senior student who acts as a guide. He provides the practical, street-smart counterpoint to Aris’s theoretical approach and Lyra’s aristocratic training. The story spends a lot of time on how these characters' personal pursuits of magic—for power, for truth, for legacy, for survival—constantly collide.

Honestly, I'd argue the key character is the magic system itself. The way it's treated as this almost sentient, decaying entity that everyone is trying to understand or control dictates everyone's actions. But if we're talking people: Aris, Lyra, and the Provost. Their triangle of conflict drives everything. Aris wants to rip the secrets open, Lyra wants to preserve the structure, and the Provost wants to eliminate anyone who threatens the status quo. Master Veld is a wildcard who doesn't fully belong to any side, which makes every scene he's in tense. The cast is tight, which I prefer—no endless parade of forgettable side characters.
