Honestly, I found the characters a bit thin beyond their central conflict. Tate's defining trait seems to be her patience and endurance in the face of Miles's pretty awful treatment. She's a caretaker by profession and by nature, which fits the role she plays for him. Miles is the classic Colleen Hoover damaged hero—handsome, wealthy, and profoundly broken by a past love. His role is to be the puzzle Tate tries to solve.

The most interesting character for me was Rachel from the flashbacks. She felt more alive and tragic in those few chapters than Tate sometimes did in the entire present-day narrative. You understand Miles's frozen heart through her. Corbin is just... there. He serves the plot. I wished for more from the supporting cast to flesh out Tate's world, but the book is intensely focused on the two of them and the ghost of Rachel.

Alright, I'll dive in with the two leads first. Tate Collins is the central character we follow. She's a nursing student who moves in with her pilot brother and meets the brooding Miles Archer. Miles is the 'ugly love' of the title, a guy carrying massive trauma from his past that's made him emotionally unavailable. His one rule for any relationship is 'no dating, no love, just sex.' Their dynamic is the core of the book—Tate tries to hold onto hope that he'll open up, while Miles pushes her away to avoid getting hurt again.

The other key figure is Rachel, who's only really present in the chapters from Miles's past. She was his first and great love, and the tragedy surrounding her is the root of all his present-day issues. It's her story that explains why Miles is the way he is. The brother, Corbin, is a minor but functional character; he's the link that puts Tate and Miles under the same roof and provides a bit of a protective, grounding presence. The book really hinges on whether Tate can break through Miles's walls, or if his past with Rachel will permanently define his future.

Tate and Miles, obviously. She's the heart, he's the wound. The past-tense chapters about young Miles and his girlfriend Rachel are crucial—they aren't just backstory, they're the reason the present-day story has any tension at all. You keep reading to see if he'll ever tell Tate what he told Rachel. Corbin's the brother who sets the whole thing up by letting Tate crash at his place, which happens to be Miles's place too. It's a tight character circle focused entirely on that central emotional push-and-pull.
