Neal Stephenson's 'Fall; or, Dodge in Hell' dives headfirst into digital immortality and consciousness uploads. After a tech billionaire's brain is scanned, a digital afterlife is created, evolving into its own reality. The book splits between the real world and the chaotic, mythologically-tinged digital realm. It's a massive, sometimes messy, but always ambitious take on what happens when consciousness becomes software and the politics of who controls that new frontier.

Ken Liu's 'The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories' has several stunning stories tackling AI and consciousness. 'The Perfect Match' explores a Siri-like AI that orchestrates a user's life, while 'Simulacrum' deals with digital recreations of loved ones. Liu has a knack for wrapping immense emotional and philosophical weight in clear, elegant prose. His stories often focus on the human consequences of these technologies rather than the tech itself.

You know, I read a lot of this stuff and sometimes I wonder if we're just writing the same story over and over. Human makes smart thing, smart thing becomes conscious, we panic. I'd love to see more where the AI is just... there, already established, and the story is about something else entirely. The Culture novels kinda do that, but I want more mundane slice-of-life with AI citizens.

I'm just here to see what others suggest because my to-read list on this theme is already insane. Every time I think I've got a handle on it, someone mentions three more books I've never heard of. My Kindle wishlist is going to bankrupt me.

Lavie Tidhar's 'Central Station' is a mosaic novel set around a giant spaceport. It's brimming with AI, cyborgs, robot priests, and digitally uploaded personalities conversing in a shared data-space called the Conversation. It's less a single plot and more a tapestry of lives, examining how consciousness exists on a spectrum from human to machine to something in between. The atmosphere is dense, cyberpunk-tinged, and beautifully melancholic.
