I got halfway through a popular rec in this genre and had to put it down because the world's transphobia was so mirror-like to our own it was triggering. I read fantasy to escape, not to relive bigotry. I wish more authors would imagine worlds where being trans isn't a source of conflict, just a fact of life. That's the future I want to see in fiction.

For a web serial, 'The Wandering Inn' has a major nonbinary character, Pawn, who is an Antinium worker. Their journey of gaining personhood, name, and class within a hive-mind species is one of the most compelling arcs in the story.

It's a massive, ongoing slice-of-life epic with video game-like mechanics, but the character work is incredible. Pawn’s exploration of individuality, faith, and identity is handled with so much depth. Fair warning, the series is millions of words long, but it’s free to read online!

My contribution: 'The Spear Cuts Through Water' by Simon Jimenez has a nonbinary god as a central figure, though the main POV characters are two young men. The narrative structure is wildly inventive, weaving between second-person and layered stories.

The entire book feels like a dream, and the way it handles divinity, love, and legacy is breathtaking. The gender fluidity of the Moon is essential to the mythic feeling. It's a challenging but immensely rewarding read that breaks all conventional storytelling rules.

Can we talk about 'The Brilliant Death' by Amy Rose Capetta? It's a YA historical fantasy set in a magic-infused Italy where the protagonist, Teodora, can turn her enemies into decorative objects. But she also has a shapeshifting ability tied to gender.

When she needs to travel as a boy, she becomes Teo, and discovers this form feels more like herself. The exploration of gender through literal transformation is a powerful metaphor, and the romance with another gender-fluid character is sweet. It’s a vibrant, inventive story about family, power, and self-definition.

Travel-based fantasies have a special charm. 'The Gentleman's Guide' takes you on a tour of 18th-century Europe with magical twists. That sense of journey and discovery, paired with a queer romance, feels incredibly liberating. It's the fantasy of adventure without boundaries, both geographical and social. The characters get to explore the world and themselves simultaneously, which is a metaphor that never gets old for me.

A genre blend I adore: 'The Space Between Worlds' by Micaiah Johnson. The protagonist, Cara, is a dimension traveler who can only visit worlds where her parallel self is dead. While Cara herself is cis, the book's core theme is about the multiplicity of self, the versions of you that could have been, and what identity means across infinite possibilities. It's a sci-fi thriller with a queer sensibility that resonates with anyone who has ever felt like a collection of different potential lives.

Can you recommend non binary books with fantasy settings?

I’ve stumbled upon some truly magical non-binary narratives. 'The Brilliant Death' by Amy Rose Capetta is a lush Italian-inspired fantasy where a shapeshifter navigates political intrigue and identity—perfect for those who love intrigue with a side of self-discovery. Then there’s 'An Unkindness of Ghosts' by Rivers Solomon, a sci-fi-fantasy hybrid set on a generation ship, where non-binary characters grapple with systemic oppression in a way that’s both haunting and hopeful. For a lighter but equally enchanting read, 'Pet' by Akwaeke Emezi blends whimsical prose with deep themes, featuring a non-binary protagonist in a world that claims to have eradicated monsters (spoiler: it hasn’t). If you’re into urban fantasy, 'The Witch King' by H.E. Edgmon offers a snarky, fiery non-binary witch navigating fae politics and reclaiming power. Each of these books weaves fantasy elements with raw, authentic explorations of identity, making them unforgettable.
