I get the appeal of free fan translations, I really do. But after seeing how much work goes into official translations—the editing, the typesetting, the author royalties—I switched completely.

My go-to is Kobo. They partner with all the major publishers, their app is great, and they have frequent sales.

More importantly, their file format is less restrictive than some. I feel like I actually own the book.

The selection is virtually identical to Kindle's for light novels, in my experience. Just a cleaner, bookseller-focused experience.

For pure volume of official licenses accessible in a user-friendly way, Kobo is a dark horse candidate. It's my personal ecosystem now.

Let's not sleep on Amazon Kindle and Google Play Books. They're massive storefronts, so they aggregate licenses from all those publishers I mentioned.

You can buy individual volumes or sometimes subscribe through Kindle Unlimited, which has a surprisingly decent light novel selection.

It's convenient if you're already in that ecosystem. The licenses are official, as the publishers upload their EPUBs directly.

The search function can be a pain, though. Finding a specific series among all the regular novels and self-pub stuff takes some patience.

I'd say for sheer breadth of available official titles, those big ebook platforms are hard to beat.

They might not have the niche or prepub access of a specialist site, but for catching up on a completed series, they're perfect.

Which light novel reading app has the most official English licenses?

This might be controversial, but 'most' can mean different things. For simultaneous releases—where the English translation drops close to the Japanese release—the J-Novel Club app is unparalleled. They pioneered that model. Other apps might have bigger total libraries by aggregating older series, but for current, ongoing series delivered officially and quickly, J-Novel Club's app feels like the most direct tap into the licensing pipeline.

Which online library reading platforms offer light novels legally?

finding legal platforms is crucial for supporting creators. My go-to is 'J-Novel Club,' which specializes in officially licensed light novels and even offers some series with simultaneous English releases. Their subscription model gives access to prepubs, and their translations feel authentic. I also love 'BookWalker,' a digital store by Kadokawa with a massive catalog of legal light novels. They often run discounts, and their global version is user-friendly. For free options, 'Cross Infinite World' offers some fully translated titles legally, though the selection is smaller. These platforms are my holy grail for binge-reading without guilt.
