Where Does The Lion Fit In The John Corey Series Reading Order?

I'm halfway through John Corey series by Nelson DeMille, but I have The Lion and I'm not sure if it's his last case or if I should read it before or after certain other novels.

Seriously, though, can we talk about how great the title 'The Lion's Game' is? It's so much more intriguing than just 'The Lion.' Makes the mix-up almost worth it for highlighting how much better the Corey sequel's title is. Just a random thought.

Can you imagine the wiki edit wars if these series had a fan-run wiki? People would be constantly moving 'The Lion' page out of the Corey category. It's a perpetual point of entry for new fans who need correction. Kind of an onboarding ritual for the DeMille fandom.

My dad was the one who clarified this for me. He's a huge DeMille fan from way back. He said, 'Son, that's a Brenner book. Different guy. Still good, but different.' He has them on a separate shelf. Problem solved.

Sometimes the old-school, physical bookshelf method is the best reference. The spines on my dad's hardcovers even look different. The Corey books are more worn out from re-reading, though.

You know, it's interesting that DeMille hasn't written more Brenner books. 'The Lion' came out almost 15 years after 'The General's Daughter'. Maybe the character doesn't have the same endless legs as Corey, who can jump from one terrorist plot to the next. Brenner's stories feel more specific, maybe more limited in scope.

Still, 'The Lion' is a satisfying sequel if you liked the first one. It just sits in its own little corner of the bookshelf, quietly waiting for fans of military procedurals to find it.

How do the John Corey series spin offs fit into the reading order

5 Answers2026-07-25 19:10:51
I appreciate a series that knows when to end the main character's story and explore the world elsewhere. The spin-offs fit as that exploration. They don't force John Corey into stories he's too old for or that would undermine his arc. They let a new character take the spotlight. So reading them after Corey's finale feels respectful to both characters. You get closure on John, then you get a new beginning. The fit is elegant thematically: one door closes, another opens.

In what order should a new reader start the John Corey series?

Honestly, I tried starting with 'The Lion's Game' because the premise hooked me, and I was pretty lost. Corey's already established, his famous suspension from the NYPD is just backstory, and his dynamic with Kate Mayfield felt like I'd missed a whole prequel. I ended up going back to 'Plum Island' and it made the experience so much richer. If you're the type who hates feeling out of the loop on inside jokes and character history, don't skip the first book. The series is more about Corey's voice than intricate plotting, so you need that foundation to appreciate his sarcasm.

What is the complete John Corey series in order to read?

Not to sound like a broken record, but it's seven books. In order. That's it. The beauty is in the accumulation of experiences. Corey's jaded outlook makes more sense when you've seen what he goes through in 'Plum Island' and 'The Lion's Game.' Later books reference earlier cases. It's all connected.

What is the complete John Corey series in order of publication

The list, concisely: 'Plum Island', 'The Lion's Game', 'Night Fall', 'Wild Fire', 'The Panther', 'The Maze', 'The Devil's May Care'. I've seen 'The Lion' listed as #2 on some retailers, but that's just a republished version. For a first read, stick to the original seven. The series blends police procedural, political thriller, and comedy. Corey's interactions with federal bureaucrats are worth the price of admission alone. Each book builds on his reputation, so order matters for callbacks and running gags.

What is the timeline order of events across the John Corey series?

The coolest timeline detail is how 9/11 is a shadow over everything. Books before it ('Plum Island' in the timeline) have a different vibe. Books after are defined by it. Corey's move to the ATTF is because of it. You can't understand his world—or his cynicism about bureaucracy and security—without that pivot point in the timeline.
