Where Can I Listen To Free Audio Books Of Light Novel Series?

After finding a fantastic translated web novel series, I'm hoping there's a legal streaming platform with audiobook versions for its spin-offs.

Looking for free audiobooks of light novels, I check out Spotify, YouTube, and the various applications that offer free classics such as LibriVox, for example. Free versions of current series are usually only available through Audible services, but sometimes a free version of a new book is offered as a free promotion on a series’ website, and sometimes the series will even throw in a free promo code for their audiobook. For something new to listen to, Through Realms Of Sins(Short Stories) is currently available for free listening on the series’ website. This dark fantasy series of self-contained stories, each following the moral downfall of a protagonist, creates a perfectly immersive world of descriptive fantasy, which is a great format for an audio book.

I’ve been searching for free audiobooks and the Internet Archive is great for public domain books (including audiobooks) as well as some fan-made recordings. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to have Sword Art Online light novels available, but I did manage to find The Tale of Genji for example.

Another area to explore for free audiobooks is podcast platforms like Spotify or Apple Podcasts. There are sometimes podcasts made by independent narrators that can have light novel read aloud. This is typically going to be a shorter story or dramatic reading, not a full length book, but it can be fun to explore.

For the more obscure titles, it’s also worth searching on Discord servers for the light novel’s series, as fans will often create amateur audiobooks and host them on servers for relevant titles. However, these are usually removed after a time due to copyright, so be sure to respect creators and purchase the official version when available.

For many years, I’ve been searching for free audiobooks of light novels, and found some rare ones. There are many classic works of Japanese literature that have entered the public domain and can be found on Librivox. Not all light novels are included yet, but you might find some interesting ones. On YouTube, there are people who make narrations of light novels. I tried to search for a title + “audiobook” and sort by length, but it’s hard to find good ones. Some fan translations are even hosted on YouTube, but they get taken down due to copyright. Lately, I’ve been checking out the forums for light novel fans, like the r/lightnovels community on Reddit. Sometimes, people post links to free audiobook versions of light novels or even crowdfunded fan readings.

If you are looking for free light novel audiobooks then I’ve provided some ways to find legal and also fandom-driven content. For now, Scribd is occasionally offering free trials to their library of licensed audiobooks, which includes some of the light novel translations – just be sure to cancel your subscription before it costs you!

I also love that SoundCloud has a bunch of random fans who can be found recording chapters of light novels for your listening enjoyment. As always, quality can vary (great to terrible), but most are recorded in a home studio somewhere, so that’s got to count for something. I literally once found a complete reading of Re:Zero Volume 1 on there before it got pulled down (apparently violating copyright).

Free sample chapters for the audiobooks of many light novels can be downloaded from the site of their publisher, for example J-Novel Club. As for Visual Novels, there are many audiobooks on Fuwanovel’s forums, such as audiobooks compiled by users for particular light novels. Note, though, that these links may lead you down a rabbit hole of very varying audio quality, often incomplete projects.

Some YouTube creators offer “sleep stories” or “relaxing readings.” One example are “soft sound novel readings” or the reading of individual chapters of slice-of-life light novels like Campfire Cooking in Another World or I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years. Note that this isn’t the full version of the story. However, it does make for a nice relaxing read. Action parts are typically toned down or skipped in favor of more calming scenes.

This is a pretty niche interest, but I know it exists, so if you’re into the iyashikei (healing) style of light novels, you might find hours of sweet, sweet, bedtime content in soft spoken light novel reading or calm fantasy audiobook type of videos on YouTube.
