There were no loud, explosive final scenes for me. Instead, the final confrontation of the book was extremely quiet, very intimate and painful. We finally understood Elodie’s decision in terms of her not wanting to seek vengeance, but rather to break a cycle of pain. Her loss and Marcus’s loss are not the same, but both are very painful. The final scene of the book with Elodie at the river, alone, with the rain falling around her, sitting on an empty bench is so melancholy. It’s not a happy ending. The book does not end on a neat note, with all problems solved. Rather there is a clean acknowledgment of pain and that is all. It’s a very heavy, yet very cathartic feeling. The sense is of something very true having been revealed to us. That we have witnessed the great burden of pain that is carried by others for them. The end of the book stayed with me for days, and in that time gave me so much to think about in terms of the choices that had been made by all the characters before. Very sad, but also very true. I sat in silence for about 10 minutes after finishing the book. I felt so hollow, but at the same time at peace.

'Little Luna' ends with Luna finally understanding her mother’s cryptic diary entries to learn a long hidden family secret that changes her perspective on everything. The reveal is fairly subtle – Luna sitting at an old desk in tears with tears dropping off her face onto the pages of her mother’s diary – and then we jump forward a year to find Luna now running a small seaside cafe and smiling more frequently. It’s a very quiet, very realistic ending with no grand declaration or unhappy reunion. Rather we see Luna in everyday situations, fully at peace and finding happiness in the simplest of circumstances. The final shot of her serving coffee to a little kid and realizing that he is her when she was little is perfect.

Let's be real, this ending totally destroyed the fandom for a long time. I've read a lot of posts on the forums, mostly written in all caps, with sad mushroom memes accompanying them. But from my perspective, this ending totally validates An Zhe's view on things. While the human characters were running around in a panic, blaming each other for everything, An Zhe simply went about trying to fulfill his simple needs. In the end, he was the only one who had a solution that did not involve destruction. And his solution was so simple, yet so beyond the comprehension of the human characters. They could only see dissolution, but not integration. An Zhe's view on things was so innocent, yet so clear. And his victory looked exactly like that to the human characters. This is a brilliant subversion of the chosen one trope: the chosen one was a mushroom and his power was not in his strength, but in his ability to integrate.

The final act is a masterful switch between the domestic thriller of the earlier chapters and a legal drama for the last 3 chapters of the book. With the help of a quiet, unassuming, stay-at-home mom who just so happens to be a lawyer, the protagonist builds a case for defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The scene culminates with a civil settlement meeting (as opposed to, say, a violent confrontation) where words, contracts, and hard cash are the instruments of power. In the end, the protagonist uses the money she won in the settlement to endow a scholarship for girls in STEM – essentially reversing the snooty old clique’s values of superficiality. A highly satisfying brand of justice.

I think a lot of people focus on the romance of this story. Instead, it is a very simple exploration of choice and consequence. The mermaid made a very cold and hard bargain with the witch – get the prince to fall in love with her and marry her, or die on the day another woman marries him. The witch never lied. So, the ending of the story is simply the fulfillment of the bargain that the mermaid made with the witch. It is a very grim, but very fair story. The ‘magic’ of the story is not in it finding some way around the terms of the bargain. Instead, it is in showing us how the mermaid deals with the consequences of her actions. She doesn’t rage against the world. She doesn’t beg for mercy. Instead, she accepts her circumstances and makes the one choice available to her in the circumstances that she has created for herself. The ending is therefore very respectful of the ‘rules’ of the world that has been created for the story. And it is very powerful as a result. It feels earned, not random.

Wildly, 'Lost Lambs' closes on a strangely cozy knot rather than a neat bow — the Flynn family’s chaos actually collides with a real-world conspiracy and then, after the chaos, the book lets the people at its center find something like repair. Harper’s obsessive sleuthing into a mysterious shipping container is the propulsive engine: her curiosity drags the rest of the family into the orbit of Paul Alabaster, a billionaire shipping magnate whose presence shadows the town. That collision with corporate wrongdoing and the container subplot is what drives the climax and forces secrets and loyalties into the open. The way the plot resolves matters because the finale refuses to choose pure satire or pure sentiment; instead it stitches both together. Reviewers describe an ending that lands with a surprisingly tender, sentimental moment after a wild, thriller-ish build, so the book ends by humanizing its absurdities rather than simply lampooning them. That tonal swerve—thrill followed by a quiet emotional tether—makes the finale feel earned: the family’s flaws aren’t erased, but the novel gives them a kind of mutual care as an answer to the systemic mess they stumble into. Why that matters to me is pretty simple: it’s rare to read a contemporary novel that treats corporate surveillance, small-town rumor, and family dysfunction with both comedic bite and real heart. The conspiracy element forces characters to confront how larger systems intersect with personal lives, while the sentimental close suggests that human connection can still be a form of resistance. That mixture—satire plus sincere emotional payoff—keeps the ending from feeling like an afterthought and instead makes it a statement about where we put our trust.

From what I can gather, the magic system is left fairly unexplained and is instead revealed to us as we read. The magic that the babies possess seems to happen randomly and often unknowingly on their part. On occasion when they cry or laugh, there are random little events that occur such as flowers blooming or water rippling. The fox notices these things and stores them away in his vast knowledge of the kits. These instances of magic are merely plot breadcrumbs for us to follow. Later on in the plot when the family meets up with other magical beings, they seem to react to the aura of the children and this is how we discover that there is something special about them. Rather than reading a novel with a magic heavy plot, this one follows a family trying to make their way in a magical world and learning that the people you care about most can be the most powerful, as well as dangerous, things about you. The mystery is slowly revealed to us through environmental storytelling.

The story complicates the notion of victimhood. While Kacey is certainly a victim of circumstance and of much emotional and psychological trauma, the ending also suggests that she may well be a perpetrator of some sort or another—possibly even a party to a cover-up of her own actions as she descended into the depths of her own panic. The resulting moral ambiguity makes for a very complex and thought-provoking read that resists reduction to simplistic morality tales long after one has finished reading.

Are the people who found her left with a guilty conscience? The story doesn’t explore this possibility.
