This is really cool to know about. Most of the exterior skating scenes were shot at the actual location of the Pacific Ocean Park Pier in Santa Monica, which by the time of the filming was long-since closed and on its dying breath. The exterior shots of the Z-Boys’ homes were all shot on locations in Venice and Santa Monica to keep it real 1970s California. For another great tale told of a very specific subculture set in remote locations, look no further than Wolf Riders MC, the novel of an outlaw motorcycle club roaming the harsh and beautiful landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. The locations of the novel are almost another character, shaping the storyline as the club’s actions are influenced by their surroundings.

Short and to the point: Lords of Dogtown was shot for the most part in Venice and Santa Monica (the actual heart of Dogtown) with other locations throughout the Southern California beaches and the Los Angeles area. Although most of the outdoor filming took place on location, a lot of the Lords action was shot on studio sound stages, utilizing Venice Boardwalk/Pier location shots and re-creating the Lords’ famous backyard pool sessions in the private homes of several of the skaters. Skate park and street skating was also filmed in various locales around SoCal to fully capture the adrenaline and the 1970s marijuana-smoked street savvy of the time. If you love Lords of Dogtown, a walking tour of the locations in Venice and Santa Monica would be great. The DVD contains plenty of Extras that show the production filmed on location at many of the actual locations and then re-created many of the scenes in the studio as well.

So I finally made it on a mini road trip last summer. I had always wondered where they had shot the movie ‘Lords of Dogtown’. Short version: most of it was shot in Venice and Santa Monica, and then the film team went to a few more nearby beach towns to shoot some scenes, and the rest was done on studio. And of course most of the exterior shots were shot on location in Venice Beach, with shots of the beachfront with skateable curbs and other great locations in Dogtown and surrounding neighborhoods.

Other scenes looked as though they had been shot in different locations around the LA area. For example, scenes shot in the backyards of residential homes with drained pools would have been shot on location in order to recreate the exact situation in which the Z-Boys first began to skate the empty pools. This would have included scenes shot in local skate parks around the LA area in order to create specific ramps and smooth surfaces in order to create specific scenes. Interior scenes, as well as scenes that required a lot of control over the location and setting in which they were shot, would have been shot on a Los Angeles soundstage in order to capture the scene in a specific way in order to create period authenticity.

Now you know what locations were used to make “Lords of Dogtown.” If you want to do a film-location tour of the movie, start with Venice, specifically the boardwalk and the streets around it. Then drive to Santa Monica and check out the surrounding beach neighborhoods. Bring your camera and comfortable shoes. Seeing these locations for yourself will surely give you even more insight into why the filmmakers picked each location.

I watched a ton of extras to these DVD features, reading the numerous blogs about the locations and venturing around Southern California to see where ‘Lords of Dogtown’ filmed. A vast majority of the film is based in the heart of old Dogtown, located in the Venice/Santa Monica area of SoCal. Filming of the film took place along the famous Venice Beach location, as well as on the Eastern and Western ends of the Santa Monica Boardwalk/Pier.

In addition to shooting on location in Venice and Santa Monica, the crew also filmed various scenes in other beach towns in SoCal, as well as in skateboard parks and on streets in LA area beach cities. The production of the pool and backyard bowl scenes in the movie took place at private homes around the Los Angeles basin. Most of these were backyards with enclosed pools, reminiscent of where the Z-Boys used to skate in the late 1960s. The majority of the interior scenes were shot on the sound stages in Los Angeles.

The film could make for an interesting road trip. Start at the boardwalk of Venice Beach. Walk towards the Santa Monica Pier and look for some of the old houses with some pretty interesting pool setups (the enclosed pools of old were pretty wild). I have even watched the extras on the DVD/bonus features for this film as it really does help to cement the feeling of the locations that the producers chose to use. Even more impressive is the way that the producers mixed and matched some of the real locations in Venice with some other locations in LA to really re-creates the time and culture of the Z-Boys. Even back then, I thought that was pretty cool.

Of course there were the standard beach locations, but I also got a chance to scout out some warehouse locations in the Mar Vista/Culver City area for some of the grittier under-the-freeway skating. There are so many huge, empty concrete basins and drainage canals throughout LA, and they were all fantastic locations. The film followed the skaters as they took over the urban landscape of empty swimming pools, schoolyards, and huge parking lots. It really captured the post-drought, all-concrete-and-jungly LA feel so perfectly.

How accurate is film lords of dogtown to true events?

5 Réponses2025-08-30
The film skillfully uses the economic backdrop of the oil crisis, the recession, and the decay of neighborhoods to serve as motivation for the kids’ invention of surfing. The film does not need to tell the audience that the kids are bored and have no money, because it shows them an empty pool, closed schools, and other indicators of lack of resources and free time. Their inventing of surfing is not a product of an environment that has plenty of resources to devote to leisure activities. Rather, it is an invention that comes from an environment of scarcity, and from a sense of grabbing hold of something and declaring it to be theirs. The film skillfully conveys the sense of economic despair in the sun-baked, cracked environment of the film. This is a powerful and truly history-based story, and one of the film’s greatest strengths is its ability to ground the story in a specific time and place.

Where was the swimmers movie filmed on location?

I’m going to be contrarian here and say that I knew the film was shot in Georgia, and that took me out of the film a little bit. I think that it was a budget decision and not an artistic choice. Because this film is set in a very specific cultural world—the Australian elite swimming system, the suburban world of competition swimming—the film really needs to be shot on location to really create that world. Otherwise it’s just going to feel like a film about baseball shot in Texas when it’s really a film about baseball in Cuba. They pulled it off well in terms of the acting and writing, but I do think that a little bit of authenticity was left behind in Australia and shot in Georgia instead.

Where is the real 'Pet Sematary' located?

I think the novel that really scared me is the one that is set at the location of my greatest fear. I wrote about a path in my back yard, behind my house, where I would walk and see graves. The idea just occurred to me. It was a terrible, powerful concept. And so the location of the novel is the birthplace of the book’s central fear. In other words, it is not some random location that I chose from a map. It is real. And so when Louis Creed walks that path, behind his house, I am walking that path. I am remembering the real leaves underfoot. That is what sells the horror. This location and circumstance inspired King to write the most frightening novel he ever wrote, because it was true.

Where was the fallen movie filmed on location?

I’ve always been one to look for the reasoning behind the choices of locations for films. The film The Fallen, for example, shot in Jordan where the locations provided an idealized version of the past; a lost, great civilization, that existed in a very harsh and beautiful land. The Czech locations, on the other hand, represented the very corrupt and complicated present of all politics and shadows and decaying institutions. The geographical narrative was without a doubt a huge factor in the film feeling as cohesive as it does thematically. The locations weren’t just chosen because they were pretty, they were chosen to further reinforce the storyline of the film. The heat haze in the desert and the chill fog in the Bohemian woods are not just weather conditions, they also symbolize emotions that the actors had to really experience for themselves and not just pretend to in front of a fan with a green screen behind them.

Where is the setting of 'Boneshaker' located?

4 Réponses2025-06-18
Alternate-history Seattle in the 1880s. Seattle is a walled city, hovering on the brink of collapse, filled with noxious toxic gas and the gaping wound left by the cataclysmic event of the Boneshaker. The privileged few live in “clean” districts of the city, while the vast majority of citizens are reduced to scavenging in the horrible Blight for the occasional, fleeting treasure. Others live in the vast, underground maze that exists below the city proper. Airships rule the skies and even seemingly safe cobblestones conceal hidden threats. Priest’s Seattle is a visceral, steampunk world of air, noise, rust and fear.

Where was Gerry film shot?

9 Réponses2026-07-02
My friend is a location scout for independent films and Gerry is sort of a legendary film in the locations world. Apparently Van Sant and Savides spent months traveling all over the southwestern states of the US in search of locations for Gerry. They needed to find places that were both epic in scale and utterly empty of human presence. This proved to be extremely difficult to find in modern America. Both Death Valley and the Bonneville Salt Flats are some of the last “virgin” landscapes on the continent – in other words, places where you can point a camera in almost any direction and not see any signs of man’s presence. The two locations were scouted for Gerry, and are still used today as a kind of benchmark for “pure” landscape shots. And Van Sant was lucky to find two such locations in the first place – let alone to combine them so effectively.

How is 'memento mori' used in film symbolism?

4 Réponses2026-05-18
Now, style becomes the coffin for memento mori in a Noir film like ‘Double Indemnity’. Shadows trace the moral decay of the protagonists in the black lit scenery of a big city. The voice of the commentary seems to come from the grave of theNarrator. ‘Sunset Boulevard’ presents the fantasies of delusion as a funeral procession. The fate of the downfall of man is projected in every cigarette and whiskey glass in Noir films. Instead of skulls and bones, a man at the end of his rope staring at a ticking clock is enough to convey memento mori.

where was float filmed

4 Réponses2025-03-13
'Float' was filmed in a serene location that perfectly captured the stunning visuals. The team chose a lush, picturesque area with calm waters and beautiful landscapes, making it a dreamy backdrop for the emotional journey of the characters. The natural beauty really enhances the story's themes of hope and struggle, creating a vivid experience for viewers. This choice of setting provides a strong contrast between the characters' internal battles and the peaceful surroundings, evoking deeper feelings in the audience. Overall, the filming locations truly bring the film to life!

Which films use should we stay or should we go on their soundtracks?

11 Réponses2026-07-28
In terms of niche aspects to edit ‘Drives’ to, it’s worth noting that the song is written in 4/4 at a steady tempo. This means that it’s a four-on-the-floor rock track. Edits can therefore be cut on the beat or on every alternate beat and they will look great. Many of the most popular choices for soundtracks are chosen for a variety of reasons including their emotional content, but also their practical utility for an editor. ‘Should I Stay or Should I Go’ is a workhorse of a track that is reliable, energetic and cuts well with most visuals.

Where was the Bang Bang movie filmed?

7 Réponses2025-09-17
The 'Bang Bang' movie, a vibrant Bollywood action thriller, was filmed in a rich mix of stunning locations that truly added to its visual appeal. A significant portion of the film was shot in the picturesque landscapes of Thailand, rendering breathtaking backdrops that are just as much characters in the film as the actors themselves. For instance, the stunning vistas around Phuket and the bustling streets of Bangkok were beautifully showcased, creating an exotic aura that complements the film's thrilling narrative. It's fascinating how the filmmakers captured the essence of both action and romance against such a lively backdrop. While I've never been to Thailand, the film definitely made me want to explore the culture and sights, from vibrant street markets to serene beaches. The choreography of scenes, combined with these locations, really elevates the viewing experience. Moreover, parts of Mumbai were also featured, linking the film's plot to its roots. It's amusing to think about the contrasts in atmosphere and energy between the two filming locations, giving 'Bang Bang' a unique flavor. Seeing familiar sites in a completely different context is always a thrill, reminding us of the incredible scope of cinema. So whether you're into action, romance, or just breathtaking scenery, 'Bang Bang' has bits of it all!
