Based on Amazon reading times the Kindle version of ‘Eragon’ can be read in about 10-13 hours, depending on how quickly you read. If you enjoy other dragon-centric fantasy books I recently finished reading ‘ERAGON THE DRAGON PRINCE’ by Christopher de Ottray. This is a complete, standalone story about a young boy who hatches a royal dragon egg and deals with the consequences of his discovery as he grows up and tries to deal with the politics of the world he lives in. It is a good alternative to starting the very long Eragon book and following the story of another ‘Dragon Rider’.

I downloaded Eragon for my Kindle during our long road trip. I assumed it would be a shortish fantasy book. No. It’s incredibly long (the Kindle edition is about 15-20 hours of reading time for average readers) and has the sort of dense world-building and long action scenes that makes for deceptive pacing. Some chapters fly by in a instant as Eragon soars through the skies on dragon-back while others meander at glacial pace as we delve into Elven politics or Roran’s distressing and mostly missing storyline. The page count for the Kindle edition bears little relation to the actual amount of time you spend immersed in the book’s world. Indeed I spent weeks reading the thing and found myself frequently going back to re-read parts of Saphira and Eragon’s relationship to soak up the details some more.

Interestingly, reading time varies depending on your reading style. The training with Brom is a quick read. The politics of the various peoples in Tronjheim however require more time and usually result in longer reading sessions as I try to absorb and understand the events of the book. Using my Kindle, I could easily see how long I had been reading, and indeed how long the book was as a whole. In my case, a fast reader, the book would probably read in about 12 hours, but I would hate to rush through such a rich and subtle work. There is far too much foreshadowing for me to want to read this book too quickly.

I read Eragon on Kindle in about 10 hours. Since I’m ridiculously fast and tend to gloss over the descriptions, the actual length of the story would probably be around 15 hours or so for a normal reader. There are short battles but tons of exposition on magic and the politics of the dwarves. It’s worth it for Saphira’s one-liners alone, though. It adds to the overall reading time, naturally.

My best guess for hours of reading would be: 16.5 * 0.75 = 12.38 hours. This number tends to be within about an hour of my actual time for most novels, since I read faster than the book is being read to me, but then slow down to read really great lines of dialogue or description over and over again.

The same calculations apply for ‘Eragon’. Test your own reading speed with this book. Read one chapter, time how long it took, then multiply by the number of chapters in the book. That’s a more accurate figure than any average they’ve come up with. And, in the process of finding out how fast you read, you’ll have a meta-read, i.e. you’ll have become more aware of your reading and how you read. You might be surprised to find out that you read more quickly or slowly than you thought you did. But in the end, just read it. The stopwatch is irrelevant.

I read this during a stressful time at work. It was my ‘thing’ to escape to. My time in Alagaësia was precious to me and I felt that I was away from my own head for 45 minutes a night. I didn’t want it to end was how I felt. I wanted it to last longer.

The value of hours reading Eragon will depend on the reader, though. If reading for fun and relaxation, the hours become irrelevant. But if reading for other reasons (such as for school and due by a certain time) then the earlier given estimates for time would be good to follow. I think reading Eragon for fun would be good for most people though, as it is one of the few foundational teen fantasies for a reason. It's comfortable, exciting, and full of wonder. Let it take as long as it wants. Those hours of reading can equal hours of relaxing and imagining while adventuring on your couch. That is a good return on time.

Anyone use the font size to read faster? I upped the font for my Kindle and it makes the pages turn faster psychically which I find very satisfying – so much so that I feel like I’m getting through more pages than I am, when in reality I’m just reading the same amount of words.

For “Eragon” I would recommend reading it in medium font size. The small font size makes it look too dense, and the large font size makes the descriptive passages look disjointed. Stick with the comfortable size you choose and follow your natural reading flow. Don’t worry too much about the clock time. The best Kindle books are the ones where you can forget you are reading a book on a piece of tech and get lost in the world of the book. “Eragon” has very clear and visual storyline, so it’s perfect for reading on a Kindle.

The book is very long for a reason, it’s not a novella, it’s an epic. There’s a lot of space given to see a farm boy transform into a Dragon Rider. Eragon’s training with Brom, his journey to cross the land, his slow but sure growth in power all take pages to become believable. A shorter book would not have given us the same experience or scope, it would have seemed shallow and incomplete in comparison.

When you talk about reading time for “Eragon” you are really talking about the amount of depth that the reader will feel while reading. In order to truly feel like Eragon, the main character of the novel, the reader has to be willing to go on a deep dive of reading instead of just taking a quick swim. The time spent reading “Eragon” is 10-15 hours of reading and it is so worth it. The novel uses its length for the most part to really build out the story and create a solid beginning to the series. The character arcs are fully developed, something that is not true for most of the shorter fantasy novels that I have read and that leave me feeling empty.

I would like to know if anyone else has found the "time left in book" feature for the Kindle to be completely and sailently inaccurate? I have stopped looking at it years ago. For example, it told me that I had 8 hours left in "Eragon" when I was 50% completed through the book. I have no idea how they come up with that number. In any case, I thoroughly enjoyed "Eragon" and it took me about a month to read it because of my busy schedule. I brought it with me wherever I went and read it a bit at a time just like I used to with an old serialized adventure. The book was just the right length for the kind of relationship that I had with it.

This was a great question for me. I can check my Kindle Unlimited history for the book on my Kindle and it shows I borrowed the book for 14 days and read it within that time frame. Since I wasn’t reading every day, I would have read most of it on the weekends, so let’s say 4-5 hours for one weekend and then 1 hour a night for the rest of the book for 7 nights.

I relied on the X-Ray feature in the Kindle version for a couple of minor characters, as I had totally forgotten them by the time they reappeared. Using X-Ray to recall their roles added a bit of time to my reading, perhaps another 30 minutes or so. However, this information was also nice to have, and I relied on it in every instance where the characters reappeared. As someone who reads for plot and story, I can report that this additional information wasn’t required to understand the plot, but it was nice to have and did add value to my reading experience.

This book has the opposite effect of most of my books - it makes me read too fast at times. I have had to make myself put the Kindle down after many chapters, allowing time for the events to sink in. Moments such as the true nature of the sword, Eragon's first flight on Saphira's back, and his parents' slaughter at the hands of Durazer all deserve a pause in reading to allow time to absorb the full impact of the scene.

As I stated before, my ‘reading time’ was extended because I had to stop to think about what was going on, look up some of the amazing fan art for Saphira, and on a few occasions I had to stop and just stare off into space for a little while. This book is a very emotional read and if I were reading it at my normal reading speed then it would have taken me around 9-10 hours to finish instead of the estimated 10-13 hours. So my advice would be to use the estimated reading time as a skeleton and then add on as much extra time as you feel you need in order to fully appreciate the book and to daydream about what it would be like to have a dragon as your own. Staring out of the window and imagining what it would be like to have a dragons thoughts in your head is part of the reading experience and no Kindle timer can take that into account.
