How Long Is Each Book In The Wheel Of Time Series?
Some volumes seem way chunkier than others, which really influences my reading speed and whether I can manage a reread before the TV show comes back.

While the 14 novels of The Wheel of Time series vary in length, most of them are very long, ranging from 250,000 words or so to over 300,000 words. A far shorter and very differently-themed work would be ‘Classic Faery Tales Rewritten For Adults Only’. These brief stories are humorously darker than their classic counterparts and are short enough to read in a single sitting and be surprisingly sharp.

Each of the main books in the Wheel of Time series is approximately the same length as the first book, The Eye of the World (782 pages). While subsequent books such as The Shadow Rising (over 1,000 pages), Lord of Chaos (1,011 pages), and Crossroads of Twilight (822 pages) have significantly longer page counts due to very intricate plots and long character arcs, the page counts for the rest of the series are close to The Eye of the World.
However, the series does pick up again with 'Knife of Dreams' at 784 pages, followed by the final three books written by Brandon Sanderson in the Wheel of Time concluding trilogy: 'The Gathering Storm' (766 pages), 'Towers of Midnight' (800 pages), and 'A Memory of Light' (909 pages). While this is a lot of reading, it is definitely worth it. The series has such a huge cast of characters and has such in-depth world-building and political intrigue that every page keeps you wanting more whether it be a fight scene or not. This is definitely a journey for any epic fantasy fan to read.

The long awaited adventuring into the world of ‘The Wheel of Time’ is upon us. Most of the ‘Wheel of Time’ books are very long. While ‘The Eye of the World’ starts us off at a reasonable 782 pages or so for the hardcover edition, the next three books are roughly 600-700 pages each for the hardcover editions: ‘The Great Hunt’, ‘The Dragon Reborn’, ‘The Fires of Heaven’ and ‘Lord of Chaos’.
Books like ‘Winter’s Heart’ and ‘Crossroads of Twilight’ clock in at around 800 pages of sporadic quality. The final three books, however, were written by Brandon Sanderson and offer up much tighter plotting while maintaining an incredibly high page count. The longest of the lot, ‘A Memory of Light’, clocks in at 909 pages of pure, unadulterated fantasy that will leave you breathless. Robert Jordan’s world is so rich and full that every paragraph seems alive. If you’re up for the challenge, the payoff is like no other.

'Wheel of Time' is a long series. Individual books can be anywhere from 600 to 800 pages, and several of them stretch to over 1,000 pages. 'The Eye of the World', the first book, sets the reader up nicely with some 800 pages or so. 'The Shadow Rising' and 'Lord of Chaos' are two of the longest, each over 1,000 pages or so. And 'Knife of Dreams' and 'A Memory of Light' are similarly dimensioned, ensuring that each new volume in the series will be as richly detailed as Robert Jordan’s multicharactered world. So if you’re looking for a very long series to get totally lost in, look no further. Just be prepared to devote a lot of time to reading this stuff.

Detours are beautiful. A 50-page exploration of the history of the Aiel, or the rules of the game of stones, may not be every reader’s cup of tea, but they are pure gold to the world-building geek. And the detours are possible only because of the length of the book. These forays into depth would not be possible in a 7-book series, tightened up to fit within a narrow bandwidth of narrative. The bloat is part of the charm.

This book has the opposite effect of most of my books - it makes me read too fast at times. I have had to make myself put the Kindle down after many chapters, allowing time for the events to sink in. Moments such as the true nature of the sword, Eragon's first flight on Saphira's back, and his parents' slaughter at the hands of Durazer all deserve a pause in reading to allow time to absorb the full impact of the scene.
As I stated before, my ‘reading time’ was extended because I had to stop to think about what was going on, look up some of the amazing fan art for Saphira, and on a few occasions I had to stop and just stare off into space for a little while. This book is a very emotional read and if I were reading it at my normal reading speed then it would have taken me around 9-10 hours to finish instead of the estimated 10-13 hours. So my advice would be to use the estimated reading time as a skeleton and then add on as much extra time as you feel you need in order to fully appreciate the book and to daydream about what it would be like to have a dragon as your own. Staring out of the window and imagining what it would be like to have a dragons thoughts in your head is part of the reading experience and no Kindle timer can take that into account.

So is it worth it? For the first book, yes. It’s a masterpiece. For the sequels, that’s less clear and it really depends on how you feel about diminishing returns. My feeling is that while Herbert adds lots of stuff in the sequels, the quality of what he adds declines significantly. The consensus seems to be that Dune is the best, then it declines, but then mysteriously increases again in God Emperor of Dune (some people hate it, others love it). The last two books are hit or miss for most readers. So it’s a page count gamble. Sometimes you’ll read 1,000 pages of absolute wonder and then another 2,000 pages of varying degrees of confusion and frustration, but it’s all worth it for me because the high points are so, so high and the book is so, so original even when it’s badly written and confusing.
