Hmm, this thread is making me realize I might have unpopular taste here. Everyone recommends the sad, aching ones, but what about the stories where the distance is actually healthy? Where it forces independence and clear communication? I'd love a novel where the couple doesn't break up or cheat, but uses the space to become better individuals. Most narratives treat distance as a villain to overcome, not a sometimes-necessary circumstance. Maybe that's not dramatic enough for fiction, but it's a reality for military families, academics, and so many others. The lack of that perspective in popular novels always makes me feel a bit unseen.

I'm going to second the recommendation for 'This Is How You Lose the Time War.' It's not realistic in setting, but in emotional truth, it's unparalleled. The letters are weapons and treasures, just like the words we choose in a vulnerable text message can be. The risk of being discovered, of betrayal, mirrors the fear of being too vulnerable or of the other person moving on. It's a heightened, poetic metaphor that somehow feels more accurate than a straightforward contemporary account. It recognizes that love across a distance is an act of creation—you are building a shared world out of words and memory, and that world is both fragile and incredibly powerful.

I'm going to go off the beaten path and suggest 'Where'd You Go, Bernadette' by Maria Semple. It's a comedy-mystery told through emails, documents, and letters, centered on a daughter trying to find her missing mother. The heart of the story is the distance—both physical and emotional—between family members, and how communication breakdowns can lead to crisis. The found-document format brilliantly shows how we try to reconstruct understanding when direct contact is lost. While not a romance per se, the central mother-daughter relationship and the marital strain depicted feel very true to the chaos that physical and emotional separation can cause in a family unit.

I find young adult often handles the intensity of first love separation well. 'Now Is Everything' by Amy Giles deals with heavy family drama, but the protagonist's secret relationship is a lifeline. Their stolen moments and forced separations due to circumstance feel urgent and real, capturing that teenage feeling where every day apart feels like a year.

Don’t forget plays! 'Love Letters' by A.R. Gurney is a two-person play entirely composed of letters exchanged over a lifetime. It traces the relationship of two people from childhood to old age, with all its missed opportunities and enduring affection, all while they are physically apart for most of their lives. It’s a stunning demonstration of how a relationship can be sustained and defined entirely through written words.
