Who Are The Main Characters In The Hole Is Open Manhwa?

After finishing ‘The Hole Is Open’ I’m amazed by how they developed their cast. The protagonist Seojun is an ordinary guy. And this is what makes him so relatable. A very human guy with his flaws and mistakes which lead to further guilt and consequences. Of course the line between heroic and not heroic can get pretty thin, but in this case Seojun isn’t heroic in any way. He’s stubborn and mostly acts out of curiosity.

Mira is so filled with practical intellect it’s nice to see her drive the story as she probes into the nature and cause of the hole with questions. The story behind her drive to learn the truth of the hole is personal, and it fuels her highly investigative nature. Her foil, Haneul is the opposite of Seojun as an antagonist. He pushes the story along to explore the very ideological control versus chaos and secrecy versus exposure. Watching him battle with Seojun, morally and verbally is where you see the true meat of the story play out.

Other characters function somewhat on the edge of ally or enemy. That is especially true for the Director, Kwon, a figure of cold institutionalism; for Minsoo, always sympathetic and also funny; and for the Keeper of the Hole, a supernatural focal point who functions more as an idea invested in a physical form than as an actual person. The dynamic between these characters forms the greatest part of the complex storytelling in The Hole Is Open. Most of the plot is comprised of character-driven moments, of unfolding mystery and of working out the resultant psychological trauma of a character’s destroyed certainties.

I’m still reeling from reading ‘The Hole Is Open’ by Haven707 and just have to recommend this to everyone! The characters are so well-written and really carry the story. At the center of it all is Seojun. He’s the reluctant star of the story who watches as his average everyday life falls apart when the hole appears. It’s really interesting to read how he develops from just a confused guy to someone with full survival instincts, to someone consumed with guilt and finally someone who wants to fix the hole he unintentionally created.

Mira is fast thinking and practical, deeply loyal to her friends. Her approach to solving the mystery at hand contrasts greatly with how events are unfolding around her, but she manages to keep a handle on the key human moments and tie them in with the supernatural proceedings as they unfold. I found Haneul to be a fantastic rival/mirror for Seojun throughout the story, with fully developed, and shifting motives of his own that keep him intriguing to read throughout.

Additionally, several secondary characters left their mark on me, particularly Minsoo, Seojun’s terrified but relatable friend; Director Kwon, who’s ominously cold throughout the conspiracy; and, last but certainly not least, the Keeper, a slightly mythic, supernatural character connected to the hole itself. All of these secondary characters complemented the main cast perfectly. In the end, a muted, yet deeply satisfied sense of unease mixed with a sense of affinity with all these terrible, yet lovable people remained with me as I turned the last page of the book.

I read ‘The Hole Is Open’ today. The story is set in a cramped and tense living room and all of the characters’ decisions affect the hole in some way. At the center of the story is Seojun who makes mistakes but tries to make amends in his own way. He is paired with Mira who grounds the story and provides emotional depth to the reader as she asks the questions of how and why instead of just what.

Haneul is snappy and charming, but also completely and utterly dangerous, and very opposed to Seojun in every way. All the supporting characters are great as well: Minsoo is sweet and scared most of the time, Director Kwon is a snooty and bureaucratic representative who manages to up the crisis-craziness of the situation, and the Keeper is mysterious and enigmatic and really at the heart of the hole. I loved all of the characters, and they all formed a really great ensemble to explore the themes of trust, accountability, and curiosity, and I’m so satisfied with how the story and characters developed.
