What Is The Main Plot Of The Owner Of A Building Manhwa?

I’ve recently gotten into reading manhwa, specifically ‘The Building Manager’ (or ‘The Building Owner’). It’s an interesting take on typical urban fantasy and action. The story follows the protagonist, Kang Younghyun, an unassuming young man who unexpectedly inherits a huge, run-down apartment building from his distant relative. However, this is no ordinary building. It is a massive structure that is situated between the human world and a host of ghost, monsters, and supernatural entities. Younghyun’s role as the building manager/owner is to act as a mediator between the normal human residents and the paranormal inhabitants, in some cases having to defend the tenants from various creatures. The building itself is one of the main characters in the story, and is constantly changing in terms of its layout and the rules that apply.

A majority of the plot lines follow the protagonist, attempting to solve some kind of problem to restore the structure to its glorious past. It involves a long list of many strange tasks to complete as well as gaining the approval of powerful supernatural beings that reside in the building. This story involves lots of twists and sometimes it slowly builds up the tension and other times there are explosive confrontations with dark forces. As the story also focuses on a bit of an urban legend, there are also a lot of cozy Korean myths.

This manhwa revolves around Kang Younghyun who has inherited a gigantic and archaic apartment building. As the Building Owner, the plot progresses with Building Owner completing specific tasks to restore his building to its former glory, and also putting powerful spirits who reside in his building at ease. As Owner continues his daily grind as the caretaker of his dilapidated structure, the line between reality and his bizarre and fantastical supernatural world begins to blur. The more Building Owner completes his tasks, the closer he gets to unraveling a huge and complex conspiracy that he had no part in creating. The author successfully depicts the atmosphere and goes into great detail to explain the world which is why I have rated this manhwa as I did. With a mix of a headstrong hero, incompetent workers, complex and fierce mystical creatures, this has plenty of action for fans of the genre. If the plot progressed at a faster pace, I would have rated this even higher.

I think of this as more of a story than a main plot. A mystery that unfolds throughout this slice-of-life type of story. Kang Younghyun does a great job in creating this weird building and then giving us a series of anthology-like chapters where we get to see the different tenants and their stories – a ghost looking to clear up some unfinished business, a goblin running a black market in the building, a human family living next door completely unaware of their strange neighbors. The plot basically follows Younghyun as he tries to piece together the different stories to determine the purpose of the building. His trying to maintain the delicate truce is full of tension, and it appears his past is connected to the building in some way that he’s only just beginning to realize. The artwork is detailed and gritty making every cracked wall and dark shadow feel important.
