Louis L’Amour created an epic family saga in The Sacketts series that covers generations of a hardy pioneer family and makes them as memorable as the locations in which they live. Tell Sackett and his brother Orrin are the main characters in most of the stories, followed by their younger brother Tyrel. Orrin is more refined, political and educated than his brothers, but they are all tough men. Orrin is definitely the leader of the two older brothers and is portrayed as a strong leader. He is compared to Tell Sackett who is a lone wolf. His brother Tyrel is very young in most of the stories and is known for being very fast with his guns. He is also very loyal to his family.
Then there is the youngest of the three brothers, Tyrel Sackett. Fast with a gun and noted for his loose and carefree life, Tyrel is very much a young man. But he is a loyal member of his family and is always there when needed. Women feature large in the Sackett stories and many of them are strong and forceful women. Ange Kerry, for example, is as tough as Tell Sackett and every bit as determined to survive on the harsh American frontier. Other women such as Drusilla Alvarado also feature in the stories and there is nothing to suggest that the Sackett world is a masculine one.
Also included in the extensive cast of characters are other Sacketts including the patriarch Barnabas and his numerous descendants who followed him out to settle and develop the western frontiers of the country. Each book in the series is a separate novel but they are all all about different members of the family and so feature recurring themes of family, of struggle to succeed and of justice. L’Amour wrote all his novels with fully realized characters, faultless but brave and honorable. In the Sacketts there are characters to like for almost every kind of reader. Tell is the very quiet hero of the opening volume, adult and sure of himself while his two young brothers are not. There’s the charming, polished Orrin and the boy Tyrel who is quick with his gun.

So many of the minor characters receive closure in this final episode. Prudie and Jud get the moment they deserve, as do Jinny and poor Jim Carter’s family. It is a wonderful testament to Graham Harding’s writing that he remembered them all. The ending of the episode serves to paint a portrait of the entire community, not just the Poldark family. Nampara, their home, is a living, breathing ecosystem and it and they have all been affected in so many ways by the good and bad fortunes of the Poldarks. Seeing what happens to the various servants, the miners and their families and the neighbors all round serves to reinforce the point that the story of Ross and Demelza was never just about them. Their struggles and successes had a ripple effect on the community around them and it’s heartening to see how they are all now thriving as a result.

I love Rex and Leif so much, but other supporting characters also get some awesome scenes. First of all, Alicia’s disappearance is what drives the whole plot of the book, and I think she showed so much strength throughout the novel even when she was stuck in Whitewood with the guys. Then there’s Ben, Rex’s older brother, who is kind of a washed up has been but adds a layer of tension to Rex and their family. I love how the authors portrayed the grossness of small town weirdness too. Like the bumbling yet possible evil Sheriff Lawson. I have so much love for each of the characters and how they are all so uniquely flawed. They are all like characters in a twisted coming-of-age movie. My favorite character is definitely Donna. She is the adult in a town of children, so to speak, and provides a sense of reason to the novel when everything else in Bleak Creek is losing its mind.

Lia is the main female protagonist of the book and two guys come to her village - Prince Rafe and Assassin Kaden. The two anonymous POV chapters before you know who is speaking (The Prince or The Assassin) were so cool. Reading the two guys before I knew which was which really drew me into their characters to figure out their motives without being misled by the title of the book and preconceived notions. The Prince, Rafe, is so confident. But also very curious and intrigueing. And The Assassin, Kaden, is very cold and detached but also very observant. It's a really clever device that makes both The Prince and The Assassin very interesting to read from the very beginning. Lia's support system is very fun too. Lia has three female friends - Pauline, Berdi and Gwyneth - that really add warmth and even humor to the story at times of high tension.

I don’t see this as a story about individual heroes. The real structures at play here are the system of royalty, the system of magic, and the system of prophecy. The main characters are the ones trying to tear down these systems, trying to preserve them, and trying to exploit them for their own gain. Kihrin is a wrench in the works, trying to throw a spanner into the machine. Emperor Sandus is trying to keep the whole system running at top speed no matter the cost. Out of the ensemble of characters, Dirac is probably the most interesting to follow as a super-soldier trying to get his memories back. Sagan is also very good, he plays the down-to-earth soldier nicely who tries to hide his wounds.
