Aria’s my spirit character—flawed but trying her best. Her relationship with Kael feels so real because they argue about petty things (who steals blankets) amid world-ending stakes. Lysandra’s notebook doodles in the margins of spellbooks are my favorite Easter eggs. Tankred’s the glue; without him, they’d’ve died in Chapter 3. Vexis? Best villain since ‘ATLA’s Azula. Their final battle made me cry into my popcorn.
Saluspars has this really intriguing cast that stuck with me long after I finished it. The protagonist, Aria, is this fierce but emotionally complex warrior who starts off as a reluctant hero—her arc from self-doubt to leadership gave me chills. Then there’s Kael, the sarcastic rogue with a hidden tragic backstory (his banter with Aria is chef’s kiss).
The quieter standout for me was Lysandra, the scholar-turned-mage whose curiosity often lands the group in trouble. Her dynamic with the gruff dwarf Tankred, who’s secretly a softie for ancient history, adds such warmth. Oh, and how could I forget the villain, Vexis? Charismatic but terrifying, with motives that actually make you pause. The way their stories weave together through betrayals and alliances is what makes the world feel alive.
What fascinated me about Saluspars’ characters is how they subvert tropes. Aria isn’t your typical chosen one—she’s bad at prophecy and great at improvising. Kael pretends to be the comic relief until his loyalty arcs gut you. Lysandra’s magic isn’t just power; it’s her love language (she once translated an entire library to save a ghost librarian). Tankred’s the heart of the group, always packing healing herbs and dad jokes.
Vexis is where the writing shines though. Their backstory isn’t some monologue—it’s revealed through environmental storytelling, like murals in ruins they’ve destroyed. Makes you wonder who the real ‘monster’ is.
If we’re talking Saluspars, I gotta geek out about the character designs first—Aria’s got this iconic scar across her eyebrow that fans love to cosplay. Kael’s the fan favorite though; everyone quotes his one-liners. The fandom’s divided on whether Lysandra’s ‘accidental’ magical explosions are endearing or terrifying (I’m team endearing). Tankred’s axe has its own fan wiki page, which says everything. Even minor characters like the merchant Guildmaster Yuri have cult followings. The voice acting in the animated adaptation really elevated them too—Kael’s VA ad-libbed half his jokes!

The Vlad Taltos series by Steven Brust is one of those gems that sneaks up on you with its wit and depth. The protagonist, Vlad Taltos, is a human assassin in a world dominated by the Dragaeran Empire, where humans are a minority. His sarcastic, self-deprecating voice makes him instantly likable. Then there's Loiosh, his wisecracking jhereg (a small dragon-like familiar), who’s basically his snarky sidekick. Morrolan, a powerful Dragaeran noble and witch, and Aliera, his fiery cousin, add layers of political intrigue and magic to the mix. And let’s not forget Sethra Lavode, the ancient, enigmatic vampire-warlord who’s both terrifying and oddly maternal toward Vlad.
The dynamics between these characters are what make the series so addictive. Vlad’s relationships with Morrolan and Aliera shift between alliances and grudging respect, while Loiosh’s constant commentary keeps things from getting too grim. Even secondary characters like Kiera the Thief or Lady Teldra have their moments to shine. Brust’s world-building is so rich that everyone feels like they’ve got their own off-page adventures.
