Her whole world had collapsed and now it was about to be submerged beneath the roaring, churning waters of the Atlantic. Salt spray created an intermittent curtain of fine mist that drifted from the ledge beneath her training shoes, and through this shimmering vista she saw something move. There was a shadow, an indistinct shape standing on a shelf of rock opposite, and separated by a churning chasm of water. The sight of it had her calling out in desperation. ‘Hello! Help! Is there someone there?’ ‘Yes, Beatrice,’ a voice called back above the cacophony below. Beatrice almost cried out for joy. ‘Thomas? Oh, thank God. Please, go and get help! I’m chained to the wall!’
