Peak chaotic energy. Haku’s duality as both a river spirit and Yubaba’s pawn adds such tension, especially when he’s bleeding paper birds. And Chihiro’s parents turning into pigs in the first act still haunts me; it sets the stakes perfectly. Even minor players like the radish spirit or the soot sprites have personality. Miyazaki doesn’t do filler characters—everyone serves the story’s themes of greed, identity, and growth.

Even Boh, Yubaba’s spoiled giant baby, gets a mini-redemption when he’s transformed into a mouse. The film’s packed with characters who start as caricatures but deepen as Chihiro interacts with them.
