Just started the manhua adaptation of Against the Gods, but the translation seems incomplete online. Does the total chapter count match the original web novel or the comic version?

I keep a spreadsheet to track where in the webnovel Against the Gods that the manhua is. The webnovel itself is around 1,847 chapters, and like with the Wuxiaworld forums translation teams tracking the chapters for various editions of the novel, I can look up where in the novel that a certain chapter is for the manhua. The manhua is currently at chapter 340 or so. The earliest chapters are a harem comedy, and then a drastic tone shift happens and it goes into body horror for the “Heavenly Slaughter Sword” transformations and the like.

Each chapter ends with one amazing full-page illustration of Yun Che standing triumphantly on top of a huge pile of corpses. Recently finished was the Dark Elf Kingdom arc. So the manhua Against the Gods that I’ve been talking about has been serializing for years now, and the raws are up to around 350+ chapters. Unfortunately for us translation followers, the official translations are being held up by the typical licensing delays. I binge-read this on Bilibili Comics last summer when it was up to about 320 chapters. The pace of the manhua is significantly faster than the original webnovel (over 1,800 chapters and still going strong), and I have to say that the art style has really come a long way. The early chapters have a rougher, more sketchy linework, but recent chapters have a very cinematic paneling that really enhances the already over-the-top battles of Yun Che.

Interestingly enough, I started reading this series after a friend compared Yun Che to a mixture of the two main characters from ‘Battle Through the Heavens’ (Xiao Yan) and ‘Martial Peak’ (Yang Kai). The typical cultivation novel tropes are used in such an audacious way that they actually become entertaining again. Right now the ‘Blue Phoenix Arc’ has some amazing double-page spreads that I’ve been re-reading lately.

The sheer number of chapters is what allows the author to go on some truly wild narrative tangents that wouldn’t be possible in a shorter work.

Look up the most reliable fan translation site, and the highest chapter # they have completed is probably your best estimate of what chapters have been translated. However, the sheer size of the novel and the fact that it is still “in progress” means that the chapter # listed is likely to be inaccurate to some degree. Just a number to keep in mind.

The raw Chinese version on Zongheng probably has a definitive chapter count but for the English versions it’s basically a jumble of patchwork chapters translated at random times and often with different version numbers. This can sometimes be denoted using the ‘Mars Gravity’ version numbers for the translated chapters, but often each site will list the chapters differently. If you trust a site to have accurate chapter counts for a novel then I’d recommend Wuxiaworld as they host translated novels and usually get the chapter counts updated by the translation team for any new chapters added.

In addition to chapters, Lunar Studio has also separated the story into volumes: Rumbling Heaven and Floating Cloud. It might be more enjoyable for readers to track their progress by completing these volumes, which also allows readers to gain a sense of the narrative’s scope.

Although it does not delve as deeply into the head of a single character nor explains as much of the world as the novel does, it does manage to cram in the majority of the important plot points in a vastly condensed manner. For example, instead of reading through hundreds of chapters of novel, one could get through the equivalent in a mere handful of manhua chapters.

The manhua is a great way to experience the scope of a story without having to get through hundreds of chapters of a novel. Yes, it omits a lot of internal monologue and world-building, but it does get to the meat of the plot very quickly. So, after having experienced a story such as The Legend in manhua form, the equivalent novel does not seem as daunting because you know who the major characters are and what the key events of the story are. Instead, you can really appreciate all of the added depth of the novel. Start with the adaptation, fall in love with the world and then worry about the chapter count being so high. It is a bonus, not a burden.
