How Many Pages Is Little Women

Love reading classic novels like Little Women but unsure about the length; different editions vary widely in page count. Wish some editions highlighted chapters focusing on Jo's writing journey.

For example, Little Women can have a page count as low as 300 pages for an abridged version for younger readers and up to 500+ pages for an unabridged version of the classic. When tracking reading, following by chapter is more useful than following a page count. I can track my reading of Naked Pages, a novel about an author’s fictional characters manifesting in reality, by percentage completion of the book as opposed to being tormented by an enormous page number.

I have seen a number of versions of ‘Little Women’ on the shelves lately. The original 1868 version was published in two volumes, totaling about 500-600 pages. The newer single volume printings can vary greatly in size (usually 400-800 pages or so) depending on the configuration of the book. Additionally, there are many versions with many illustrations which can be much larger than regular versions, and then there are the titchy versions, which are usually about 300-400 pages.

I really love Little Women. It’s so long but it feels like it’s just the right amount of time because the story unfolds at its own pace. And even though the original book is so long, you don’t even realize you’re reading for so long because the characters are so real and you feel like you can really see them and then you’re sad when the book is over. If you’re new to classics, don’t let the size scare you off–it’s really a great read full of drama, humor, and very good life lessons. And if you’re short on time, there’s always the audiobook version which is about 15-20 hours long.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott is a classic that I keep returning to in literature. The version I have is approximately 750 pages long but there are variations depending on publisher and font size. Other editions of Little Women have been published in abridged form, making them approximately 500 pages. However, the version I read in my teenage years must have been around 750 pages as I remember reading it in small chunks over long winter nights while snuggled up in a blanket, feeling as though I was sitting in the parlor with the March sisters. This is a very detailed and heartwarming book that feels as though you are having a long conversation with old friends. It is a very detailed book and therefore perfect for someone looking for a long, detailed, and very heartwarming read.

I read 'Little Women' first when I was a teenager and I think I got a 600 page edition or so. It took me a while to get into it but then it was great. The editions vary from under 400 pages to over 800 (I have an annotated edition) - the hardcover editions seem to have a lot of extra material (author notes etc as well as discussion questions etc at the back).

One of the most interesting things about Little Women is the way in which the author mirrors the sisters’ lives – slow in parts and then racing along. While the page count may put some people off reading Little Women, it is definitely worth it. The audiobook or even an e-book where you can change the font size to suit would be great alternatives. The additional pages contain so much detail and actually add to the overall experience of reading this classic.

When looking at translations of a book, it is also important to realize that the original work was written in English. So for non-English versions, the page count will vary based on language. My copy of the French version, ‘Les Quatre Filles du Docteur March’, published by Folio, is 624 pages long. All languages differ in word length and in grammatical construction, so the translated text will generally be longer or shorter than the English original. This is a small point, but one that could affect a reader who were to be reading Longmeadow for the first time in a language other than English – they would find that the book ran to rather more or fewer pages than they had expected. In my case, reading the book in French had the effect of making me read more slowly, and with greater appreciation of the individual sentences, than I do when reading in English – even if it did run to a few dozen more pages than the standard English edition of the book.

Can I download Little Women pdf legally and safely?

You can get Little Women legaly and without risk. Since the original novel is public domain you can download it for free from websites like Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks and the Internet Archive. These sites offer the novel in different formats (like PDF). For me it’s important to stick to websites I know already, to look for modern introductions and for illustrations (they might be copyrighted though). Also I try to avoid file-host sites and torrents that pretend to offer the book. Yes, sometimes extras like annotations, introductions and translations cost money but that is usually because they are under copyright and the author/translator/creator is being paid for their work. You can get a “clean” copy of ‘Little Women’ that is ready for you to read for free or for borrowing from a variety of sources. I download public domain books from sources I trust, or I borrow e-books from my local library through their app. I get a lot of pleasure from reading ‘Little Women’ in a nice, clean copy, and I get a little thrill of excitement when I open up a copy and start reading.

a little life how many pages

The book is a physical thing, part of its aura. The 720 or so pages of the paperback edition weigh heavily in your hands. The themes of the book are reflected in its physical form. I read the book as a paperback, the spine eventually cracking completely, the covers becoming flexible and worn from their many travels. The book became a object in my life for a few weeks, something that I would pull down from my shelf and begin reading once more. As opposed to an ebook, I feel that this is a book that should be read in print. There is nothing like feeling the weight of a book in your hands, seeing how far you are into the story and marking your place with a bookmark between the thick pages of printed paper. The page count of the book translates into a physical presence. The book sits on my coffee table, a quiet and imposing object that reminds me that I am reading a long and complex story. The book is a commitment that you can see and feel.

how many pages is don quixote

Cervantes needs a companion – not a book, but a guide. It would be really useful to have a few pages summarizing the historical context of the book or an analysis of the individual chapters. As it stands, the page count could be mitigated by reading the book as if you were learning about the Spanish Golden Age. The humor in novels and romantic stories that Cervantes parodies would be so much greater if you had an understanding of them. So read Cervantes as a project, not just as a book. The pages become steps in your deeper education.

How many pages are in War and Peace?

When reading on a phone or tablet with reflowable text, the question of what a page is can become quite abstract. Every change of font size will cause the pages to change as well. My app however tracks my progress correctly and I can see that I’m currently 47% through the story. All in all, the digital format makes a big difference to the intimidating thick spine of print books. Rather than hiding in fear of the unknown inside a print book, you can simply start reading the story and it unfolds at the same pace as if you had read a print copy. And if you’re one of the page-phobic people, this is the way to go. No more counting of pages, just reading the story.

How many pages does the of mice and men book have?

In order to achieve his perfect and terrible balance, Steinbeck used exactly the right amount of description of the clearing, the bunkhouse and the barn in order to create atmosphere and foreshadow the terrible events that are to come. Every line of dialogue is used to reveal character and drive the plot to its grim conclusion. Thus, the question of page count is almost irrelevant. Just as one wouldn’t ask how many brushstrokes there are in a masterpiece, the page count of a perfect work of literature is simply logistics. Your copy may say 105 pages, 112 pages or even 118 pages but rest assured that within those pages lies a complete, flawless and devastating work of art.

How many pages are in The Hobbit by Tolkien?

For comparison, the graphic novel adaptation of The Hobbit by David Wenzel comes in at about 130 pages. As expected, the more visual graphic novel format can get the same story told across in fewer pages of prose than The Hobbit novel. Tolkien uses all those extra pages to relate his unique narrative voice, to include all the songs from the novel, and lots of very descriptive asides too. Those are things you’re paying for.

How many pages are in the lost book?

4 Answers2026-06-07
I have no idea how long ‘The Lost Book’ is supposed to be. Every so often someone comes up with a new reference to ‘The Lost Book’ – some obscure passage in a private diary, a footnote in a biography – and for a while they go round telling everyone that it was 10 pages long, or 1,000. It’s all a great story, far better than any actual number. And it remains unknowable, just like Schrödinger’s novel – 10 pages long, 1,000 pages long – until someone opens it. And no one ever will.

How many pages does Wuthering Heights PDF have?

I see my Kindle Paperwhite measure my eBook to be 416 ‘locations’ (not pages), but that changes to 384 when I switch to ‘page view’. Note that this count changes with font size as well. Of the many digital formats, only PDFs have a stable page count due to fixed layout. Therefore, for stable page numbers in academic work, the only digital format that works well is PDF. Then just check the properties of the PDF for the last page # once.

How many pages does the Beowulf PDF have?

As for page count, honestly I never cared to look. There were too many exciting moments for me, like the scene at Heorot, the swimming competition with Breca, and the harsh journey to the mere. It felt endless but at the same time instant, like I was right there in the moment. It didn’t feel like I was reading a document, instead I was sitting in a mead hall listening to a scop tell stories of old. The PDF (that I read on my old e-ink reader) was just a vessel to carry the story. A great translation is one that makes you forget that you are reading a document, and you are transported to another world.

how many pages is a romance novel

7 Answers2025-06-10
I get to count front matter and back matter, right? So that means the copyright page and the dedication and the table of contents and the author's note and the preview of the next book all count as well. That's another 20 pages or so of non-story. An ebook lists all locations of a book, so a book of 350 locations is 350 'pages' of story. But in reality, that only translates to 320 pages of actual written story, not 350. This is one of my bugaboos when judging a book by its length. I have to flip to the start of Chapter 1 and the end of the book's last Chapter to get a true story length. Some publishers are better than others at counting up the actual number of story pages in a book of a given page length. For example, a 380-page hardcover might only contain 350 pages of written story. It's a small difference, but one that matters to the truly page-count-conscious.
