For Mari Hannah's Kate Daniels series, each book follows a chronological case order, with personal arcs carrying over between installments. However, her other series like DCI Ryan are separate, so you'd need to check a fan-made timeline or her website for a complete cross-series chronology. If you enjoy complex character timelines woven into a gritty setting, you might like 'The Heaven Hill Series', which centers on a disgraced lawyer returning to her dysfunctional family's Kentucky bourbon empire; the tension comes from buried secrets resurfacing across generations, demanding you piece together the past alongside the protagonist.

Can we take a second to appreciate how gruesome the crime scenes are in her books? The timelines are fine, but the atmosphere is what sticks with you. That bleak Northumberland landscape is a character in itself, timeless in a way.

The supporting characters are the best clue for timeline continuity. In a series, you see their lives change: marriages, promotions, retirements. That’s how you know time is moving forward in a believable way. Hannah does that subtly but effectively.

My two cents: don't overthink it. Start with 'The Murder Wall' (Kate #1) or 'The Settled Earth' (Stone & Oliver #1) and just enjoy the ride in order. The timelines will make sense as you go. Hannah is a former probation officer, so the procedural details feel real, and that realism grounds the timeline better than any date stamp.

Emily Parker has lived her entire life in the shadow of Marcus Kane — the man who stole her mother, tortured her, and claimed her as his own. Escaping him cost her everything. Surviving him left scars too deep to count.
When fate ties her to Rhett Maddox, ruthless president of the Vipers MC, Emily finds something she thought she'd lost forever: safety. Love. A chance at a family. But safety is a fragile thing, and Marcus Kane has returned to take back what he believes is his.
As war ignites between the Serpents and the Vipers, Emily is forced to confront every nightmare she's tried to bury. Rhett will bleed to protect her. Ghost — the Vipers' most haunted enforcer — will uncover truths that change everything Emily thought she knew about her past. And when the dust clears, Emily will stand face-to-face with Marcus Kane one last time.
But vengeance is never simple. It costs blood, brothers, and more than Emily ever thought she had left to give. This is a story of survival and scars. Of love found in the ashes. Of family forged in fire. And of one woman who refuses to belong to anyone but herself.
By the time the final bullet falls, Emily Parker will no longer be the girl Marcus Kane broke. She'll be the woman who ends him.

Yeah, no book comes before it. 'The Murder Wall' is where it all starts. I think the confusion sometimes comes from the fact that the story references past events in Kate's life, making it feel like we joined mid-stream.
But that's just good character writing—she has a history before page one. The narrative present, however, begins with that book. It's a cracking read, too; the setting is almost a character itself.
I think the standalones are being slept on. 'The Lost' is incredible. It's technically a Kate Daniels book, but it works as a standalone because the case is so insular. Still, you'll get more nuance if you know Kate's backstory. So my recommended chronology is just the two main series in their own order, with standalones featuring familiar characters slotted in later.
Look at the copyright dates inside the books. The lowest number is the first one. Problem solved. You don't need the internet or fan advice. The books themselves tell you which came first.
As an audiobook listener, this is crucial. The narrator, Colleen Prendergast, becomes Kate Daniels. Listening in the correct order lets you hear her embody Kate's growth, the weariness creeping in, the resilience hardening. The audio production for 'The Murder Wall' onward is consistent and fantastic. Audible has them all listed in number order, which makes it foolproof.
