Are Mari Hannah’S Series Connected, And How Should They Be Read Chronologically?
Been obsessed with detective Kate Daniels after picking up 'The Murder Wall'. Now diving into the DCI Stone series and wondering about a proper reading order for Mari Hannah's universe. Is it all one world? The release order versus timeline debate has me tangled up.

I'd argue the only must-follow chronology is Kate's. Her personal journey is the spine of that whole series. With Stone & Oliver, since it's newer, the character development is still unfolding, but the cases are more self-contained. You could potentially read those out of order with less confusion, but why would you?
The fandom wiki actually has a great list, but basically: Publication order is your friend for each series. For Kate: 1. The Murder Wall, 2. Settled Blood, 3. Deadly Deceit, 4. Monument to Murder, 5. Kill Me Again, 6. The Death Messenger, 7. The Insider, 8. The Ninth Circle, 9. The Lost, 10. The Hunt. Stone & Oliver is simpler: The Silent Room, then The Scandal.
I see some lists online that merge everything by pub date. Ignore those. They're for completists. For a first-time reader, that's a confusing mess. Separate the lists in your mind. Kate's story. Stone & Oliver's story. The end. The chronological reading order is two simple columns, not one tangled thread.
I'm gonna go against the grain a bit. While yes, the Daniels series is deeply sequential, I actually think 'The Silent Room' (first Stone & Oliver) is a better entry point to Hannah's writing. It's tighter, a brilliant intro to her pacing, and if you love it, you then have the massive Daniels saga to look forward to. It's like a fantastic appetizer before the main course.
I think the standalones are being slept on. 'The Lost' is incredible. It's technically a Kate Daniels book, but it works as a standalone because the case is so insular. Still, you'll get more nuance if you know Kate's backstory. So my recommended chronology is just the two main series in their own order, with standalones featuring familiar characters slotted in later.

The supporting characters are the best clue for timeline continuity. In a series, you see their lives change: marriages, promotions, retirements. That’s how you know time is moving forward in a believable way. Hannah does that subtly but effectively.
Look at the copyright dates inside the books. The lowest number is the first one. Problem solved. You don't need the internet or fan advice. The books themselves tell you which came first.
As an audiobook listener, this is crucial. The narrator, Colleen Prendergast, becomes Kate Daniels. Listening in the correct order lets you hear her embody Kate's growth, the weariness creeping in, the resilience hardening. The audio production for 'The Murder Wall' onward is consistent and fantastic. Audible has them all listed in number order, which makes it foolproof.
Publication order is the safest bet for any crime series, honestly. You want to see the detectives' relationship develop and the recurring side characters pop up. Skipping around ruins the slow-burn personal stakes Hannah weaves into the police procedural stuff.
Yeah, no book comes before it. 'The Murder Wall' is where it all starts. I think the confusion sometimes comes from the fact that the story references past events in Kate's life, making it feel like we joined mid-stream.
But that's just good character writing—she has a history before page one. The narrative present, however, begins with that book. It's a cracking read, too; the setting is almost a character itself.
