On Android, tap the three dots next to a book in your library, and select “Download” from the options. If a book has already been downloaded, the options will change to “Move to SD Card” and so on, depending on the phone and storage set up. The Kindle app manages where downloaded books for offline reading are stored on a user’s device based on the device’s default download location. For example, I’ve been reading Kidnapped By My Fated Alpha offline on my phone, and the Kindle app managed the storage just fine, as that book is a gripping paranormal romance that got me through a long plane ride, and I’ve left it downloaded on my phone to read later.

We can move Kindle reading files to an SD card. There are several ways to do this and each way depends on the device and even Kindle app version that you are using. So here are the common ways to move downloaded Kindle books to an SD card and some of the things I encountered along the way.
For Android devices, by default the Kindle app will download books to your internal storage (e.g. /sdcard/Kindle/documents on most devices). However, the app does allow you to change the location of downloaded books to an external storage location such as an SD card. This can be done within the Kindle app settings (e.g. hamburger menu -> Settings -> Storage -> Change -> SD card) or within the device’s settings for apps (e.g. Settings -> Apps -> Kindle -> Storage -> Change -> SD card). Note that not all Android devices or Kindle app versions will support this option.
The Storage settings for downloaded books on Amazon Kindle books is easily accessible on Amazon Fire tablets. Just go to the settings, then select ‘Storage’ (found in Device Options on older Fire OS devices). Click on ‘Move Content to SD Card’ and wait a few seconds for the files to transfer. These settings also include an option to change where new Kindle books are downloaded to – Device or SD card. This is very useful. As for sideloaded books such as .mobi, .azw3 etc. just copy the files to the ‘Kindle’ or ‘documents’ folder on the SD card. The Kindle app/Fire tablet should then import the files automatically. The only caveat to note here is that DRM’d Amazon-purchased books cannot be moved freely around a device and will download to the Internal Device Storage when opened on occasion.

Monitor your SD card for sufficient space and for decent read speed – slow SD cards can slow down page turns. Finally, when all else fails, check to see if an update to your e-reader’s Kindle app or to your device’s OS might solve the problem at hand – in my case it took a couple of iterations on a few different approaches but I finally managed to move the relevant files to my external storage and I’m happy.

Keep things simple, because that is how I roll with my tinker-projects. To make the Kindle app use an SD card, first, check within the Kindle app settings for “Storage” or “Download location” and change that to the SD card, if available. Next, check within your phone’s Settings > Apps > Kindle > Storage for a “Change” button to enable movement of the app and its downloads to the SD card. Support for moving the app to external storage on Android is provided for certain Android versions.
Fire tablets: Go into Settings -> Storage. Look for an option to move content to the microSD card, or change where new downloads go to on the card. Note that sideloaded content is stored in .mobi/.azw3 files in a ‘Kindle’ or ‘documents’ folder on the SD card. These can be imported into the app using your file manager. Note that DRM-protected content you’ve purchased cannot be moved to an SD card, and using an extremely slow SD card can cause the app to run slowly. If no SD card move occurred then none of the following crimes could have occurred either: No symbolic link for normies created. No app move that transfers data to SD card occurred. No manual file placement occurred. No cloud reader workaround for offline occurred. So the only remaining “crime” is time travel. Go back to 2010 and buy a phone with a microSD slot. Buy an OS that allows true app-to-SD movement. Or create your own ebook format and get your own custom ebookstore ecosystem up and running. Until then we are all stuck with today’s app design philosophies for better or worse. It’s not great but at least we can all commiserate about our collective frustration on various forums. Solidarity in shared frustration!

My answer to this question is simple: You can’t do this. Kindle app storage locations are a feature of many proprietary platforms and an ‘ongoing’ challenge that I have attempted to explain in the past, using my own experiences as an example. So, for example, I once managed to fill the storage of my old phone. My solution was to invest in a phone with more storage for my next upgrade. Alas, this won’t help you. Additionally, documents that you have sideloaded (e.g. PDFs) that you have sent to your device via ‘Send to Kindle’ may reside in a different location. But, you can try using a file explorer to look for a ‘Kindle’ folder on your SD card. I wouldn’t hold out much hope here.

Will this ever change? Super-integrated-ecosystems like Apple are moving towards a model where one can not only redeem a gift card but spend money directly within the app itself. It’s possible that Amazon could follow in their footsteps but I can see why they wouldn’t want to. For one, as it is, Amazon controls the entire purchasing experience for customers who purchase on Amazon.com and are able to promote additional products on the same page. There is also the fact that Amazon would avoid the 30% cut that Apple and Google take on in-app purchases. I wouldn’t count on seeing a “Redeem Gift Card” button within the Kindle app on your iPad in the near future. This minor detour to purchase from the comfort of your iPad in the browser is a small price to pay for the enormous selection of Kindle books.

I have found many people to misunderstand this function because Kindle books are not simple files that one can email to themselves. Kindle books are protected by Digital Rights Management and are meant to be read within Amazon’s eco-system. Therefore, to download books previously purchased, one simply registers a new device to their Amazon account and all of their prior purchases will download. I find it is like having a Netflix account. One does not transfer a movie from one TV to another. Instead, one simply logs into Netflix on the new TV. This also applies to books that have been borrowed from Prime Reading or from Kindle Unlimited. Those books will only download if one currently has an active membership.

This post lists out many of the little Known issues with Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing and I agree with just about all of them. The biggest limitation for me right now is the iOS/Android app restriction - Amazon won’t sell ebook in-app for Kindle because Apple and Google take 30% or more, and Amazon wants to sell ebook for lower prices. So you can only purchase Kindle ebooks through mobile web browser or from desktop computer. Small price to pay for lower ebook prices, I suppose.

I think Amazon would be more than happy to extract money directly from your Apple device for digital goods they sell in apps. Amazon, however, refuses to pay Apple 30% of every ebook sale, thus Amazon has opted to disable purchasing of books in the Amazon app (and I'd assume other digital goods). Gift cards, as Amazon payment methods, fall under the above restriction. So, it appears we have a corporate turf war playing out amongst thehuge corporations and you get to suffer as a result.

I forgot to check whether the book I requested from the library was a PDF. Most PDFs don’t read very well on the Kindle – the text is typically too small and doesn’t reflow to fit the screen. You can “Send to Kindle” a PDF and choose whether to have it automatically converted by Amazon, or not. I’ve had the converted version be almost as bad as just reading the PDF on a tablet, but sometimes it works okay. The book is converted by Calibre to MOBI or AZW3 as well, but that is essentially random and depends on the quality of the PDF that was created. I would recommend just trying to read the PDF on your tablet. If you really want to read it on your Kindle, you could try sending it with “Convert” in the subject line of the email, and hopefully it will work out okay for you. A lot of library eBooks are PDFs of scanned book pages, so don’t read very well on any eReader.

I am a huge fan of the '100 unread books' challenge. My collections reflect this. I have 'The 100 List' collection that contains the 100 books that I intend to read before I buy any more books. Then I have 'The Backlog' collection that contains all the other books that I have purchased but that are not on 'The 100 List' and are therefore not being read. When I finish a book from 'The 100 List' I remove it from the list and move the top book from 'The Backlog' to 'The 100 List'. This way 'The 100 List' is a constantly rolling list of 100 books that I am reading. It turns my huge Kindle library from a source of guilt to a game. The two collections are simple to set up and use but they enforce a strict discipline on my reading that has already saved me so much money in avoiding impulse purchases of books.

As a huge fan of the Kindle app on my tablet, I have a rather large library of eBooks. However, from time to time, my library becomes a bit of a mess as it contains a lot of finished reads that I don’t intend to read anymore. To remove these books from my library, I can go into ‘Library’ view within the app, find the book and press and hold the book cover. This brings up a menu and from here I can choose to either ‘Remove from Device’ which removes the book from the current device but leaves it in my Amazon account should I wish to re-download it at a later date. Alternatively, I can choose ‘Delete Forever’ which I only use for books that I’m certain I’ll never read again.
Just a side note: Remove from Device will only remove the book from the device that you’re currently on. All of your other devices will still have access to the book. If you want to remove it completely from your library, you can go to Amazon’s ‘Manage Your Content and Devices’ page via a browser and delete it there. This can be a bit of a pain, but it’s a nice way to organize and delete lots of books at once. Using your mobile to remove books is quick and easy to do on the go.

I wanted to be able to read on my phone, but I didn’t want to be tied to my Kindle hardware. The Kindle app for your iOS or Android phone or tablet works really well. You need to have an Amazon account to log in to the app and download books that you have previously purchased. For new books, you can download them to read on your phone as well. I have even added borrowed books (from friends and from the library) to my phone. I use Calibre to convert the book to a MOBI file and then I email it to my Kindle address.
One minor obstacle I faced was with books that had DRM. To get around this I occasionally use the ‘Unlock Ebook’ functionality within Epubor Ultimate (I’m very aware this is usually classed as copyright infringement, and thus use it sparingly). Otherwise it’s very easy to organize your books with tags. The ‘Send to Kindle’ functionality from desktop applications works very well for me with my academic PDFs, just check the supported file types on Amazon first.
