Downloadable Kindle titles that you have purchased can be downloaded to additional devices by signing into the appropriate Amazon account on the Kindle reader or Kindle reading application. Titles in your library sync up across your devices. Content that has been side loaded, such as free anthologies like the short supernatural stories read here (‘Shifter Short Stories’), can be sent via the ‘Send to Kindle’ email address or by connecting the device up via USB and transferring content as required for compatible files.

All Kindle books can easily be moved from one device to another. As someone who manages a large digital library of hundreds of Kindle books this is how I go about transferring Kindle books. For Amazon-purchased books I log into the same Amazon account on the new device. In the Kindle app or on the device go to Library and select Cloud. There you will find a list of all your Kindle books. Click on the down-load icon to the right of each title.
I can also use Amazon’s Send to Kindle service for personal documents and books I have ‘sideloaded’. I can send these via email to my Kindle’s email address – found in the Kindle’s settings menu – or use the Send to Kindle desktop application which allows for the drag and drop of files, even of multiple files at once. If transferring to a non-Kindle device, such as an iPad, I install the Kindle app and sign in. All of my books will then be available to download from the ‘Downloaded’ or ‘Cloud’ sections of the app’s Library.
Note to users: enabling Whispersync in the settings allows you to keep your highlights, notes and last reading position up to date on all your devices – a great feature if you switch between your phone, your tablet and your e-reader as often as I do.

I’ve had to move Kindle books between devices on a few occasions and, surprisingly, it’s pretty easy to do. First, register both devices to your Amazon account and your Kindle library syncs automatically so you can then download any purchased book from the Cloud section of the new device. Sideloaded books can be added using the Send to Kindle app or by emailing them to your Kindle email address – just attach the file and set the subject to ‘convert’ to ensure that it is converted into the right format for your device. I’ve used this to add PDFs and EPUBS to my Kindle and it works a treat. If you’re also moving to a non-Kindle device then you can also download the Kindle app to access your entire library as long as you’re logged in.

I’m getting good at transferring Kindle books between devices. First, you need to make sure both devices are using the same Amazon account. Then, downloaded books will automatically appear in the Cloud library on the Kindle book’s page in the Kindle app. Click to download to that device.
To add content to a non-Kindle device such as an iPad or iPhone, I can load up the Kindle app. All of my purchased Kindle books are stored in the Cloud, so they appear in my app immediately. I can also add sideloaded books such as EPUBs and MOBI files to my app by using the Send to Kindle email addresses for each of my Kindle devices (found under ‘Device Options’). Once an email with an attached book is sent to the email address with ‘convert’ in the subject line, the book appears in my library almost instantly.
Switching to a non-Kindle device is also made easy by the Kindle reading app. All of your books including any you have sideloaded are synchronized to the app. It is great to continue reading where you left off on whatever device you are currently using.

I am going to explain the 'Download & Transfer via USB' option for the Amazon Kindle in detail, because this option is the closest to real file transfer as it gets. On the Amazon website go to 'Manage Your Content and Devices'. Search for your book and click on the '...' on the right side next to the title. Select 'Download & Transfer via USB' from the context menu. You then select the Kindle for which you want to download the book from the drop-down list of all the Kindle devices registered to your Amazon account. After that you download the prepared .azw file to your computer, connect the specific Kindle for which you downloaded the book and drag and drop the file into the Kindle's 'documents' folder. Note that you will not be able to transfer that file to a different Kindle.

Your archived items are also archived on your old device (even if you deleted them from your downloaded books list to make room). Now that you have a device with more storage, you might want to re-download some of these archived books. Make sure you’re viewing your library as ‘All’ or ‘Cloud’ and not just ‘Downloaded’. I’m familiar with this problem and it’s not made easy by Amazon but it is possible. The first thing I tried for this problem was the Family Library feature for sharing books between other accounts in your household. This is set up in the Amazon account holder’s settings for Amazon under ‘Amazon Household’. Once you have set up your other account(s) as part of your Amazon Household you can then add books to share in ‘Manage Your Content and Devices’.
No – that won't work (although that feature would be lovely for non-families too). In that case you need to remove the DRM protection. I use Calibre e-book management software with the DeDRM plugin to remove Amazon DRM protection from downloaded books, which can then be converted to whatever format is required to transfer the e-book to the other Amazon account holder by email or USB. There are plenty of online tutorials to guide you through removing Amazon DRM using Calibre.

For those of you visually-oriented folks, here’s a mental flowchart for moving your books to your new Kindle. Was the book purchased from Amazon? Yes -> it’s in the cloud. You register your new Kindle and download the books. No -> did you email it to yourself or use “Send to Kindle”? Yes -> these things are linked to your account email. Just re-send to your new Kindle email. No -> it’s a USB sideload. Copy files from your old Kindle’s “documents” folder to the corresponding folder on your new Kindle. Note that the only real variable here is your reading progress. Books from Amazon are synced via Whispersync, but non-Amazon books do not get synced in this fashion. That means you might have to find your place in these books. Not ideal, but that’s the nature of the current e-book ecosystem.

I wanted to be able to read on my phone, but I didn’t want to be tied to my Kindle hardware. The Kindle app for your iOS or Android phone or tablet works really well. You need to have an Amazon account to log in to the app and download books that you have previously purchased. For new books, you can download them to read on your phone as well. I have even added borrowed books (from friends and from the library) to my phone. I use Calibre to convert the book to a MOBI file and then I email it to my Kindle address.
One minor obstacle I faced was with books that had DRM. To get around this I occasionally use the ‘Unlock Ebook’ functionality within Epubor Ultimate (I’m very aware this is usually classed as copyright infringement, and thus use it sparingly). Otherwise it’s very easy to organize your books with tags. The ‘Send to Kindle’ functionality from desktop applications works very well for me with my academic PDFs, just check the supported file types on Amazon first.

This is super simple to do. Just Google ‘DeDRM tools Calibre’ and the first result should be a GitHub page for the plugin. Click to install and follow the instructions. Make sure your Kindle for PC app is authorized with your Amazon account. Download books to this app and then add the books from your Kindle’s data folder to Calibre (or connect your Kindle to your computer). The plugin will then strip the DRM from your books during the import process. From there you can right click on any book and change it to an EPUB file. You can then save this new EPUB file to anywhere on your computer. This whole process of transferring and converting your books is really quite simple, especially with a plugin doing all the hard work for you in the background.

I forgot to check whether the book I requested from the library was a PDF. Most PDFs don’t read very well on the Kindle – the text is typically too small and doesn’t reflow to fit the screen. You can “Send to Kindle” a PDF and choose whether to have it automatically converted by Amazon, or not. I’ve had the converted version be almost as bad as just reading the PDF on a tablet, but sometimes it works okay. The book is converted by Calibre to MOBI or AZW3 as well, but that is essentially random and depends on the quality of the PDF that was created. I would recommend just trying to read the PDF on your tablet. If you really want to read it on your Kindle, you could try sending it with “Convert” in the subject line of the email, and hopefully it will work out okay for you. A lot of library eBooks are PDFs of scanned book pages, so don’t read very well on any eReader.

Most of my novels get transferred to my Kindle from my Mac on a weekly basis. The most straightforward way to do this is via USB. You just connect the Kindle to your Mac, open up the Kindle’s ‘Documents’ folder, and dump your novels in there. Organizing a large library on the Paperwhite is greatly improved with Collections!. After moving all your books to the device, take some time to organize them into Collections on the device or on the “Manage Your Content & Devices” website. You can organize purchased books as well as personal documents into the same Collection (such as a bookshelf). It isn’t until you organize the thousands of books that you transferred to the device that you can say that you have completed the transfer process. Organizing on the website is much faster than organizing on the device. Select the books you wish to add to a collection, click “Add to Collection” and then select or create a collection. Note that Collections organized on the Amazon device sync to other Amazon-enabled devices where you have purchased books.
