What about the 'unfair' ones, though? Sometimes a twist relies on information the reader couldn't possibly have, like a secret twin never mentioned or some obscure scientific fact. Those feel like a betrayal. The fair ones make you feel smart for figuring it out, or at least dumb for not seeing what was there. The unfair ones just make you feel cheated. The line is so thin, but so important.

Physical objects treated with thematic weight. A locket that keeps appearing, a specific book always being referenced, a recurring type of flower. In a fair-play mystery, these aren't just atmosphere. They're clues with a literal function. The locket contains a hidden message, the book's title is a code, the flower is poisonous. The author signals their importance by repetitive mention, training the reader to pay attention. The twist reveals their practical role in the crime. It's fair because the narrative spotlight was on them; we just didn't know why they were in the spotlight.

How do mystery thrillers balance clues, red herrings, and reveals?

I have a soft spot for historical mysteries. The clues are often period-specific—a type of poison, a social custom, a historical event. The red herrings rely on the prejudices and knowledge gaps of the era. The balance has to feel authentic to the time period. A modern character would solve it in a day with technology, but the historical detective has to rely on observation, intuition, and period-appropriate knowledge. It adds a fascinating constraint to the whole balancing equation.
