'The Last Party' by Clare Mackintosh is a police procedural that uses unreliable memory brilliantly. On New Year's Day, a man is found dead in a lake between Wales and England. The suspects are all friends and neighbors who were at a party the night before. Everyone's memory is foggy from alcohol, and their recollections are colored by old rivalries and secret alliances. Watching the detectives try to build a timeline from these contradictory, self-serving accounts is a masterclass in plot construction.
I'm a big fan of 'The Appeal' by Janice Hallett, told entirely through emails and messages. The unreliable memory is baked into the format—people are writing about events after the fact, with their own biases, and sometimes they're outright lying. You, the reader, have to be the detective, comparing different characters' 'memories' (as they present them in writing) to piece together the truth. It's a fantastically engaging puzzle.
One that's stayed with me is 'The Collective' by Alison Gaylin. A mother joins a secret group of women who have all lost children to violence. The group's activities become increasingly extreme, and the protagonist's memory becomes a key battleground. Is she remembering her daughter's case correctly, or is the group manipulating her recollections to fuel their vengeance? It's a terrifying look at how grief can reshape memory and how ideology can overwrite personal history.
I feel like 'The Night Swim' by Megan Goldin fits here too. In the present, a true-crime podcaster covers a rape trial. In parallel, she investigates an old, unsolved drowning death from letters sent by the victim's sister. The 'unreliable memory' is societal—the town's collective memory of the drowning girl is tinged with gossip and judgment, and the current trial forces people to confront their memories of the accused and accuser. It's about how public narrative corrupts private truth.
Don't forget 'The House in the Pines' by Ana Reyes. The protagonist is haunted by a memory she can't trust: witnessing her friend drop dead in front of a mysterious man seven years ago. Now, she sees that same man in a viral video where another woman dies similarly. Her investigation forces her to revisit her own hazy, trauma-blurred memories of that summer and the stories her friend told her. Is there a supernatural element, or is her mind protecting her from something worse? The atmosphere is super creepy.

After my best friend Lily Warren was assaulted, she took her own life.
I was the only person who knew who had done it.
And I was the one who helped cover for him.
When Lily's mother knelt at my feet, begging me to tell the truth, I turned away with a cold face.
When the people in town called me heartless and smashed my door, I let my dog, Buddy, attack them without hesitation.
Ten years later, I was dying.
My long-lost best friend, Claire Sutton, returned as the wealthiest woman in the country. The first thing she did was drag me onto the memory-trial platform normally reserved for death-row prisoners.
"Rachel Vale, you disgusting animal. You protected a rapist. Lily and I were blind to ever call you our friend!
"Lily has been dead for ten years, and you let her attacker walk free for ten years!
"Today, I'm going to use the memory extractor I developed to see exactly who you've been protecting!"
But when the real culprit appeared before everyone, Claire Sutton collapsed on the spot.
She could barely stay on her knees.
My husband pretended to lose his memory in a car accident just to fulfill his young girlfriend's wish to become vice president—and to strip me of my position.
As I passed by, I accidentally overheard her whisper to him, "Since you agreed to let me borrow the title for seven days, can I borrow you for seven days too?"
He smiled and leaned down to kiss her lips. "Of course. Use me however you like."
I stopped in my tracks but did not expose his lie.
The next day, at the conference table, he slammed his hand down and declared that his girlfriend was his real wife. He ordered me to get out of the company and hand over all my projects.
Every employee turned to look at me, waiting for me to put a stop to his outrageous performance.

I was shocked. This fine piece of man has never had a girlfriend? “Why not?” I asked him.
“I was saving myself for my mate. You don’t know how long I’ve waited for you. How long the three of us waited,” he answered.
“Waited as in no girlfriends?” I asked.
He smirked, “princess, you’re my first everything. Our first everything.”
He winked at me when realization hit. Oh my god. We were all virgins. They saved themselves for me.
