I just read that the main trio, Zachary Gordon (Greg), Robert Capron (Rowley), and Devon Bostick (Rodrick) were all about 13-14 years old in this 2011 movie. Oh, and Devon Bostick, who plays Rodrick, was 19 years old in this movie because he played a high school student. Anyway, I’ve been reading ‘My Roommate is a Boy’ lately and it’s really good. There’s this really awkward yet sweet dynamic between the two teenage boys and their pranks and loyalty is really touching. I guess this is really a story about that age and I love how cringeworthy it is yet so heartfelt at the same time.

I am one of those people who notices how old an actor is in relation to the character they are playing. In Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, the main characters are all around the same age, and then there is the older brother Rodrick, played by Devon Bostick who was 19 when the movie was released in 2011. The actors who play Greg (Zachary Gordon), Rowley (Robert Capron), Holly (Peyton List) and Chirag (Karan Brar) were all around 12 years old when the movie was released. The parents of the main characters, Mrs Heffley (Rachael Harris) and Mr Heffley (Steve Zahn) were in their early 40s. This large age gap between the kids and the parents is what makes the movie so funny, because kids act like kids, a middle sibling can act like he is invincible, and then there are the parents trying to keep everything from falling apart. I noticed this when I watched the movie first, and every time I watch it again, I still find it so sweet and funny.

The parents, Susan Heffley (played by Rachael Harris) and Frank Heffley (played by Steve Zahn) were in their early-to-mid 40s at the time of the movie. Karan Brar, who plays Chirag/Chirag Gupta, was about 12 years old during the time of the movie too. This group of children is so fun to watch in this movie and it feels so nostalgic every time I watch this! It is also pretty cool to see how some of the kid actors have grown up.

Casting affects the tone of a film greatly. The “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules” film released in 2011 had the majority of the young cast members around pre-teen age. Zachary Gordon (Greg) and Robert Capron (Rowley) were about 12 years old in the film, as well as Peyton List (Holly) who played the grd school friend of Greg. Karan Brar (Chirag) also was around the same age as well as the other Griffindor students. Devon Bostick played the older Rodrick He was about 19 in the film which was perfect for the older slightly more developed bully/prankster. Adults in the film like Rachael Harris (Greg’s and Rodrick’s mom) and Steve Zahn (Rodrick’s dad) were in their early to mid 40s which made them fit to play the exasperated but loving parents to the two brothers. The cast had the perfect mix of real and mature enough to play their parts on screen, that is why I can watch and re-watch this film and always feel like I am getting a realistic look into the life of a pretty chaotic but somewhat realistic family.

It’s sort of nice to note how films like to cast people a bit older to play the middle-school age and the film Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules did that with the child actors well. In 2011, Zachary Gordon (Greg) and Robert Capron (Rowley) were 11-13 years old and starred in the film with Peyton List (Holly) who was 17 years old and Karan Brar (Chirag) who was 15 years old. Devon Bostick (Rodrick) was a bit older at 19 years old. The parents were played by 40-something Rachael Harris and Steve Zahn. The age spread between the sibling and their parents worked really well to create a believable dynamic of a pre-teen and a teenager versus their parents. I like to see the cast’s real age compared to their on-screen age – it’s sort of a fun little bit of trivia for me.

Alexis Knapp was 22 and her character’s crazy energy totally matched her. The whole film felt like they just let a group of young actors go wild and it worked so well.

Who could forget the hilarious weight guessing episode? (Incidentally, they never did guess each other’s ages – presumably because the writers feared a huge can of worms opening, and a commitment to sticking to a single age for each character for the run of the show was not in their manifest). As it was, a comedy first, a continuity-heavy drama a very poor second, they were generally not good at sticking to these sort of things (characters returning from the dead; highly fluid, malleable timelines etc).
It’s smarter to just avoid this entire topic all together. I mean, there’s a lot of potential plot holes here and a lot of potential for fan nitpicking of the show. For example, ‘but if she’s 17 in July, then in November she’d be…’. No. They’re all forever teens stuck on some sort of island (or plane, or film lot). It’s simpler, it’s cleaner, and it allows for better comedy. So no, I don’t want to know the ages of the characters. The lack of information on this topic is a deliberate choice by the writers.

When filming ‘Skins’ most of the actors were straight out of school. Joe Dempsie who played Chris was 20 during filming, but the character is much younger than that. The casting team found some great young actors who could portray the struggles of their characters whether it be a first love or dealing with mental health. They found kids who were already living that life. This is why I think ‘Skins’ is such an awesome show and still resonates with lots of people, because it is a snapshot of youth, created by youth.

It’s fun to speculate about how the relationships will play out between the cast members announced so far. As noted above, Vikander and Styles have a big age difference, which will be interesting to see play out with their therapist/patient dynamic. Theo could easily be idolizing/lasing Vikander’s character, and their interactions will likely provide plenty of emotional resonance. Then, there’s Claflin and Vikander’s scenes together in the pretentious/glamorous art world and against the sterile backdrop of Theo’s asylum for the insane. With the group of established actors of different generations, the potential for magical or awkward moments is high. This makes for great conflict but also great bonding as they have to learn to trust each other’s brand of wisdom and grow up as a team.
